Great post Pkit!
I'd say my personal fear is items number 5 and 6 - I've seen too many of those walking zombie, especially among young MC consultants in the office.

What I cannot understand is how someone believe in point 8? If you want to be an enterprenuer, you need to try doing biz, not to read about it. 60-70% of graduates end up in MC or Finance, so that tells you about the mindset and governing disciplines in the school.

Point 7 is the biggest value and the best reason of doing an EMBA. Unfortunately I don't see such a clear benefit in doing a traditional MBA.

Thank you for a great post. I will definitely keep it mind, I think I'm a humble guy but it doesn't hurt to listen or to read great advices often.

I work for an international non profit. Once they sent me to this anthropology seminar to learn about cross-cultural relationships. The goal was to teach us to successfully adjust to a new country. What I remember: you can adjust to almost anything, but the reason why people fail and end up returning to their home countries is because they held higher expectations of what the experience was going to be (many think: going to that country? cool, exotic! but after 2 months there they can't stand the new language, food, costumes, weather, etc).
So I think a similar thing happens here. Many applicants have a dream they expect will be fulfilled attending bschool. Sometimes that dream is beyond reality. The fact is that we can't hold the school responsible for what the school didn't promise. Thus the importance of research and attending for the right reasons.

Thanks for the post. Very insight and helps us stay alert and away from the imagined promises projected by an MBA degree

I have it precisely backwards: I woudn't want to be an entrepreneur without having gone to Wharton. All the skills and the network you will get will enhance your entrepreneurial career if you choose such path.

Why do people go to Consulting or Finance? See the point about student debt?

A real eye opener! Thanks for the post.

I agree with Vorski about the comment. I want to start my own company and hope to gain as much business knowledge that I can (from bschool) that will help me run my company.

well i figure going to business school even for consulting or finance will give you great business skills that can be applied when looking for a business to purchase or when starting up your own. more importantly, you will have developed a network of clients, investors, and business partners, all of which may help make the goal of starting a business more feasible.

Hardly anyone with a basic comprehension of finance would say that "DCF will always tell you what a company is worth".
