This diagram displays the percent of population that has high cholesterol versus the number of active farmers markets for 35 states in the United States. The size of the bubble gives a visual representation of the population of each state. The smallest bubble represents a population of approximately 600,000, while the largest represents a population of approximately 13 million.
Fill each blank using the drop-down menu to create the most accurate statement on the basis of the information provided.
1. For the state with the median number of farmers markets, approximately percent of the population has high cholesterol.
2. If the state with the highest incidence of high cholesterol has a population of approximately 3 million, the number of people with high cholesterol in that state is approximately of the number of people with high cholesterol in the state with the greatest number of farmers markets.
can you please explain the answer to question no 1. the median is supposed to be 200 and at this point, it will be 27.5%. i am not clear about the answer.

The median is the area between 150 and 200 and the biggest bubble in that area is at 30 percent. Hence (C) is correct.
State with the highest incidence of high cholesterol has a population of approximately 3 million ==> No. of people with high cholestrol in this state = .34 x 3million (top highest bubble) = 1.02 million
the number of people with high cholesterol in the state with the greatest number of farmers markets (last bubble) = .2875 x 13million = 3.73 million
1. For the state with the median number of farmers markets, approximately____________percent of the population has high cholesterol.
Median s around 175. Look at the area closer to 200. It is 30% --C
2.. If the state with the highest incidence of high cholesterol has a population of approximately 3 million, the number of people with high cholesterol in that state is approximately____________of the number of people with high cholesterol in the state with the greatest number of farmers markets.
Approximately at 325 (area between 300 and 350) has highest number of farmers market and also has the biggest bubble. It is given that the biggest bubble has the value of 13mn. We have take its 28.75 %(30+27.7/2)=3.74
Hi pudu, can you please explain how median is 175. As per my understanding looking at the distribution of data points, median should be ~100. Am i missing something?

Mheshkv look at this....size matter in the case of bubles

what i did ignored extremely small bubbles and started from the median. And look at sajjid post...what he said is right
Hi pudu, Apologies for troubling you again with questions!
Let me share my thought process and can you help me bridge the gap? 35 states are shown over the chart, so median number of markets would be x axis values of all bubbles and selecting the one in the middle 17 towards left and right. Which would be the one with ~100 markets.
I could not follow the point regarding, size matters in case of bubbles? But how would that be relevant to this question.

Same problem for me as well. I think this logic should be correct

Same here, I don't get this and I would guess 27.5 instead of 30
The first question troubled me for some time, The median number of farmer's market will be in the 18th State from top or bottom(in terms or number of farmer's market in any state).
We just need to count to the 18th bubble from right of X axis(# Farmer's market) , And the 18th Dot will be the one at (100,30) on the graph, hence 30% is the correct answer.
18th state in terms of number of farmer's market will have 30% population with high cholestrol

Hi, could you please elaborate your answer? I didnt understand how you came down to area between 150 and 200. Thanks!
This diagram displays the percent of population that has high cholesterol versus the number of active farmers markets for 35 states in the United States. The smallest bubble represents a population of approximately 600,000, while the largest represents a population of approximately 13 million.

The graph gives three details, as shown by colored portion below.
Bubble: The size of the bubble gives the population, while the center of each bubble would give % of population with high cholesterol and number of farmers markets corresponding to y-axis and x-axis coordinates respectively.
Let us work on the blanks now.
1. For the state with the median number of farmers markets, approximately _1_ percent of the population has high cholesterol.
Median: When the numbers/elements are placed in an order, the middle number, if odd number fo elements, or the average of the two middle numbers, if even number of elements. Here there are 35 elements(bubbles), so the middle value will be (35+1)/2 = 18. Since we are looking at median of number of farmers markets, which is on x-axis, count the 18th bubble from any end. This 18th bubble lies on 30% line ( the left of the two on the line). Thus the answer is 30%.
2. If the state with the highest incidence of high cholesterol has a population of approximately 3 million, the number of people with high cholesterol in that state is approximately _2_ of the number of people with high cholesterol in the state with the greatest number of farmers markets.
The state with the highest incidence of high cholesterol has a population of approximately 3 million means the top most bubble, that is bubble with the highest value of y-axis coordinate. The value is approx 34.5%, and total number would be 34.5% of 3 million, that is 1.035 million. The number of people with high cholesterol in the state with the greatest number of farmers markets. The percentage is around 28.5 and population given is 13 million, so the number = 28.5*13 = 3.7 million. As a % 1.04 is nearly 28.1% of 3.7, so the answer is 28%
The median will be between 150+200/2 since its n is an even number. The correspondent bubble is at 30%.

can you please explain the answer to question no 1. the median is supposed to be 200 and at this point, it will be 27.5%. i am not clear about the answer.
>Look for the state with highest cholesterol: ~35% >If they have a 3 million population thats ~ 1 million people with high cholesterol >We know the state with the largest population is 13 million >They also have the greatest number of farmers markets (which is what the question is asking for) >~28% of 13 million have high cholesterol ~ 4 million >1 million is 25% of 4 million >closest answer is 28%
