Today a certain cinema multiplex has exactly two showings (an early showing and a late showing) for each of five films (Films A, B, C, D, and E). All of these showings occur after noon, and each showing consists of the film only, with no previews, announcements, or advertisements. The following gives the duration of each film and the start time for each showing:

Film A (90 minutes); 3:45 and 5:30
Film B (100 minutes); 1:30 and 7:15
Film C (105 minutes); 2:00 and 6:00
Film D (115 minutes); 5:00 and 8:00
Film E (125 minutes); 12:15 and 7:00

Statement: The early showing of Film 1 overlaps with at least part of both showings of Film 2.

Select for 1 and for 2 the options that complete the statement so that it is accurate of the showings listed in the information provided. Make only two selections, one in each column.
The duration of first movie should fill up the gap between two shows of second movie. So, film 2 will be one which has one of the least gap between the two shows.
Let us test the least first: Film A (90 minutes); 3:45 and 5:30
So the first show ends at 3:45 + 90 min = 5:15, and second show starts at 5:30.
Now, we check for any of the films that have their first show at 5:15 and 5:30 both.

Film D runs for 115 minutes at starts at 5:00, so it will run from 5:00 to 6:55.

So, 1 is film D and 2 is Film A.

Hi. Can anyone help me to understand the timings. I am unable to visualize the show starting times.

Question days : "All of these showings occur after noon"
So what time of the after noon time would 1215 represent. And how can early showing be at 1215 and late showing at 0700.

It would represent 15 minutes after 12:00 noon.

That means the same as that the early showing is at 15 minutes after 12:00 noon and the late showing is at 19:00.

but why would author use two different notations. Just to confuse the test taker ?

The aren't really different notations.

Regardless of whether 7:00 or 19:00 is used, 12:00 is the conventional way to express noon.

Responding to a pm:

One show has to overlap with a part of two shows of another movie.

No movie is for more than about 2 hrs (max is 125 mins). This means that the time difference between the two shows of the other movie should not be more than about 4 hrs. Worst case, the first movie starts in the last minute of the first show and ends in the first minute of the second show of the other movie.

Hence B and E cannot be the other movie. C is also not possible because it has 4 hrs (240 mins) gap and it is only 100 mins long. So a movie would need to be at least 140 mins long to overlap with both shows of C. But max movie length is 125 mins.

The shows of A are very close together. Let's see if the early show of a movie can overlap both these. It would start almost at the same time or later than the first show of A. The only possibility is D.

When D starts at 5:00, A's first show would be ongoing and D would be ongoing when A's second show starts.

Select
1 - D
2 - A

This question cost me 10 minutes... and cratered my score by reducing my consistent 90th DI percentile and 100th percentile in two-part (mock 1 + mock 2) to 50th percentile DI... I just couldn't solve it and didn't realise how much time I spent on it. Got it wrong and the last three questions that I needed to guess as well..

Great approach by Marty...

Use logic to eliminate possibilities. I have discussed a few points to note here: https://gmatclub.com/forum/today-a-cert ... l#p3470255

This question can be answer almost without any calculation and in ~1min. You just need to notice that the early showings start at 12:15 and the last starts at 5:00, while the late showings just start at 5:30! This means that the early showings are almost disjunt to the late shows. So the most probable intersection is with the last movie from the early sections (movie D). The other movie being overlapped with movie D in the afternoon is movie A (3:15+90min = 5:45 > 5:00). Also, the easly showing of movie D intersects A's later showing (5:00+115min = 6:55 > 5:30).

You can also visualize by ordering the movies per showing:
time: (noon)---------------------(5h)--(5h30)---------------------------------|
early: E------B------C------A------D-------------------------------------------|
late: ------------------------------------------A------C------E------B------D---|

So "D" and "A" are the movies to fill the blank.

why not D and C? C starts at 6pm

D’s early show is 5:00 to 6:55.
C’s early show is 2:00 to 3:45.

There is no overlap between 2:00-3:45 and 5:00-6:55.

The 6:00 start you’re noting is C’s late show, which D early does overlap, but the requirement is to overlap both of C’s showings. Hence D with C fails.
