Yea, 760 is not a free ticket, something I learned over the last several years of unsuccessful applications. I am so thankful to have just gotten accepted after numerous rejections from higher and lower ranked schools alike. A good GMAT score is a starting point, but not a free pass to $$$ at schools.

<--- Waitlister now a T15 at Tuck. There is life on the wait list. ;) Hang in there and this was great post!

Now that I have had a chance to think:

Congratulations to all the admits; you deserve it ten times over! I hope that this community played a small part in your victory today.

I had a gif saved for today, in case I got in. I knew exactly which one I wanted to use.

HOWEVER, I didn't get in, and I became very unhappy and upset. I had worked so hard, AS DID MANY OF YOU. I don't have to go into the details, because you all get it. You all worked hard and poured your soul into your application, and for many of us it simply didn't work out how we imagined. I notified many of my close friends and family about the outcome and received many statements including the words "don't worry" and "sorry," but I really didn't find a whole lot of comfort in their words. However, something else extraordinary happened. I received PM's from various social media and public messages on this forum from people that I have "met" on this journey; something I did not expect. In many ways, it means more to me, because we are in this journey together, we are sweating together, and we are bleeding together.

As I read the messages, my mood changed. I thought that I am actually pretty lucky to be in the WL column; I'm sure many people that were dinged would prefer to be WL'ed. I realized that I am pretty lucky and should be very grateful of my position. And then I thought, I'm actually pretty lucky to even be applying. I come from a small town on the West Coast and now have a great job in a metropolitan area. The fact that I'm even IN THE ARENA is pretty great. I've had a lot of successes (as many of you have had) and quite a few failures along with them (as many of you have had). But I'm grateful to be in a good place in life, and to be in a place that allows me to help others.

So for me, tonight was a win. Here's the gif:

tripsd, what would you say made the difference in your case between being admitted to Tuck and your previous dings?

I have only now really started to reflect on it (since I was pretty pessimistic about getting into Tuck based on past results), but there are some things that really stand out in retrospect.

Getting to know the school: this was probably the hardest thing for me. I have been extremely guilty of ranking obsession, and it took a while for me to really understand that it probably takes more than a couple google searches to start to understand the character of a school. Tuck was the first time I really put in serious effort to reaching out to alums and current students. Even silly things like getting a better understanding of living situation at a school I think can make you stand out. For two reasons, first it means you can speak more directly to why you think a school is a good fit and secondly its a really positive signal to the adcom. Obviously this won't be enough to overcome a weak profile but I think it can probably make a difference on a borderline candidate. This round I spoke to numerous tuck students and alums and didnt speak to anyone from the other schools. Dings and accepts follow the predictable pattern (although I admit based on the schools, there might be more to it).

Articulating why MBA: for me coming in with an advanced degree and a very nontraditional profile I had to work hard to convince the school that an MBA even made sense given my background. This involved just spending a lot more time on my essays and editing over and over and over. I found it valuable to save every draft, and made sure to compare say draft 13 to draft 1 to see where the essays were getting stronger and maybe where I had drifted away from my original points. Tuck wasn't my school with the most edits but I still had roughly 30 versions before I submitted and that was only because I was hard up against the deadline.

Personal Growth: for me the last three years have been about finding ways to grow. This isn't even directly related to my desire to get an MBA, but more generally feeling kind of dissatisfied with life. This was my last shot (at least in my opinion talking to my partner and such we had decided it was going to be) at getting into business school. So I was working to improve my situation regardless of what happened this application season. I started volunteering, ALOT. This wasnt done to improve my odds of admissions directly, but mainly because of some personal experiences that made me feel like it was an important thing to do. I also think that I was working at this for myself as opposed to trying to improve my profile might have made some difference. Whether its picking up a cooking class, doing some home improvement, or working in the community, i think showing constant self improvement (or at least attempting it) can really strengthen your case.

Interviews: I practiced. Quite a bit. In front of a mirror, on the phone with friends with MBAs, with my partner, in the car to work. I feel like I'm easily intimidated by people I look up to, and clearly anyone interviewing me would be someone I would look up to immediately (if that makes any sense). So for me getting used to answering odd questions, and being able to think on my feet was important.

I know thats a lot so to sum it up: getting to know the school, really understanding/articulating my goals, self improvement, practice practice practice.

One of my favorite quotes that I have seen from gmatclub.com is from NonYankee: "I do feel that many on these forums tend to miss the forest for the trees"[1]

Guys - There are other schools besides Tuck! Just because Tuck dinged you does not mean you need to give up on your advanced degree aspirations. Yes, I agree that Tuck is a great school with an awesome alumni network, but it is not the only tree in the forest. There are still plenty of schools that will provide you with the same opportunities that Tuck can provide. BSchool is just a step that we, motivated professionals, utilize in order to achieve our ultimate career goals. If Tuck doesn't want to help you achieve your career goals, find another tree that will.

In addition, there is a round 2! Yes, I know it is approaching very quickly, but if you leverage the chip on the shoulder that Tuck just gave you, you can still put together a solid application to another school or two.

[1] - the-2012-2013-zero-admit-club-144164-40.html

I applaud the spirit and good intentions of your encouragement, but I think it oversimplifies the situation a little bit. A person may have unique goals that really make the "trees" where he or she applied the best places to achieve those goals, and other "trees" not worth the price tag of attending there. Or a person may have a background where really this year was the last year. Here, I'm mainly thinking of age. As an over-30 candidate, applying again next year for a third time, being one year older, would just make it even harder to get in somewhere.

So while I was a bit dire in my post where I said b school was not in my future, and I don't mean to be completely down on your post, I just wanted to explain where I was coming from.

I'd like to take a moment to address a not-so-serious topic....

I can't believe no one has pointed out the incredible irony of this tree/forest metaphor yet. (I think it is a great metaphor - just a funny pick given that Tuck is the school referred to)

a single tree in the forest.... one might even say a... "lone pine"....?......

hmm didn't realize the reference was that obscure. doesn't seem to have gained much traction. :(

"The "Lone Pine," originally known as the "Old Pine," was a colonial-era white pine tree that stood for more than 150 years on what is now called Observatory Hill, above the Dartmouth Green."

I think that the lone pine is just a stump today (how about the metaphor now? lol)

It also used to be the name of Dartmouth's tavern in the student center, although they replaced it with a coffee space a few years ago

Updated Admit Analysis

Hi gbrooks,

There is atleast one friend I know who is a member on this gmatclub and on this thread, but who hasn't reported an admit. So you can add one to your number for sure :)

And best of luck to all friends who have got a WL. Hope you get off soon to get accepted.

Hey Fallingleaf, I'm so sorry about that and I do apologize if my post made you uncomfortable...I think I was misled by my friends' overwhelming "you are admitted for your score" thing. Anyway, I really wish you luck to leave WL and get an IN!
