| FROM Mccombs(Texas Austin) Admissions Blog: When Less Is More: Short Answer Questions Explained |
|
short answer questions on the application for our working professional MBA programs are modest in length, but will require your deftest wordsmith abilities to answer each question thoroughly and briefly. Choose your words carefully! Though we’re using your answers to help us determine whether you are a good fit for the Texas MBA, you should try to use them to help gain perspective about your adult self and motivations for pursuing an MBA. Question 1: What are your short-term career goals (either during or immediately post-MBA) that the Texas MBA will help you achieve? (200 words) This question is about as straight forward as it gets. Why do you want to earn a Texas MBA? It should be easy to go on and on about this topic. What should be difficult is narrowing it down to 200 words which express your core desires on which you are basing your decision to apply. One key part to remind all applicants about this short answer question is that we’re not planning on sharing it with anyone else: your employer, recommender, significant other, etc. Be open and honest. If part of your post-MBA plan is to leave your current company, that information is confidential so feel free to be as accurate as possible to help us understand your motivations. Also, for the record, neither I, nor anyone on the committee plans to count words, but please don’t give anyone a reason to. Six pages, unless typed in 48 point font, clearly isn’t anywhere close to the suggested word count. Keep it brief and concise. Question 2: Transcripts, test scores and work history are all very important factors of the application, however, they don’t tell the whole story. Tell the Admissions Committee something about yourself that we will not be able to glean from the rest of your application. (200 words) Everyone has a story. One of my favorite parts of my job is meeting all of the amazing applicants who go on to become students in our program. I’ve never met any Texas MBA applicant whom was admitted that told me about how one day in their boring life they happened upon the idea of attending the Texas MBA program. Texas MBAs are very interesting people who’ve done amazing things to get where they are and will continue to do amazing things throughout their entire lives. Tell the admissions committee some of the amazing things about yourself. Be creative. I’ve seen everything from well written paragraphs, to bullet points, to a collage of art with verbiage sprinkled throughout. There are no limits of expression…except the 200 word limit. If you’re still unclear on that, please refer to the end of the explanation for question one. Optional Essay: Please provide any additional information to the Admissions Committee that you believe is important and/or will address any areas of concern that will be beneficial to the Admissions Committee in considering your application. (200 words)
A word of caution when considering this essay: don’t believe that the admissions committee won’t see a weakness in the application. Unsafe bet: The admissions committee won’t catch that my math classes in my first two years of college were less than favorable. Safe bet: The admissions committee reviews files all day long and it’s their responsibility to vet all applicants for the Texas MBA by reviewing every part of the applicant’s profile. So if you see a glaring weakness, just get ahead of the issue and address it in the optional essay. Thanks and good luck on your MBA journey! |
