When we write about languages and alphabets, it is not uncommon to put them in present tense as can be seen in the following solid GMAT Prep question.

The Achaemenid empire of Persia reached the Indus Valley in the fifth century B.C., bringing the Aramaic script with it, from which was derived both northern and southern India alphabets.

A the Aramaic script with it, from which was derived both northern and
B the Aramaic script with it, and from which deriving both the northern and the
C with it the Aramaic script, from which derive both the northern and the
D with it the Aramaic script, from which derives both northern and
E with it the Aramaic script, and deriving from it both the northern and

The OA is C using a present tense verb, in spite of the fact it all happened in the fifth century B.C.,

I was under the impression that either A or B was a closed marker.

Can someone explain to me why an extra the in front of Latin is not required? I know that the additional the is redundant, but how do I know when to break the parallelism rules?

Shouldn't it be "greek or latin alphabets'?

Shouldn't we go by the meaning of the original sentence?
The Original Sentence states 'one' whereas the correct answer states 'each' -- thus having completely different meaning.
What if the author meant 'one' and not 'each'?

It will be great if experts can please clarify. Thanks!

I agree with Badboson. Shouldn't we adhere to the original meaning of the original sentence?

I was 50/50 on choice B and E but I chose B because by choosing E we are altering the meaning of what the author was trying to convey - only one of the letters is borrowed.

Kindly elaborate what is the standard for this so we don't make the same mistake again

Thanks!

"one of which" wrong in this context: (A) and (B) out.
The subject all must be followed by plural verb "represent": (D) out.
(C): no sense, awkward
Hence, (E)
each of which is borrowed from either the Greek or Latin alphabet, represent

There is nothing like meaning of the original sentence. It's not true that the meaning of the original sentence will always be correct. We have to go by logical meaning.
