Officialy dinged.

Engineering from top Brazilian school, 3 yr WE as oil and gas consultant, 760 GMAT, based in Brazil with experience in 6 countries.

One of my colleagues at my company was invited on the 6th with a 690 GMAT and similar profile - an indication that execution matters as much (or more) than stats!

Best of luck to those invited!

Ding now official. 3.5, 750 and 5 years experience as commercial lawyer. Rejected.

Was fully expecting the result, but seeing all of the posts above really reinforces the fact that for the top programs, strong stats ultimately don't really get you anywhere. Hopelessly it's less true at some of the other programs I'm applying to, but for all of the time and effort that people put in to earn a high GMAT and undergraduate GPA, it's almost meaningless at a program like HBS or GSB, because basically everyone has them, and you don't distinguish yourself at all that way.

Anyway, gave it my best, so I'm content. Congrats to all of those who got invites, and for those joining me in the reject lounge, best of luck on your remaining apps.

Execution as in application strategy and tactics.

We both actually sat down and compared our submissions to diverse schools. For HBS there were differences in strategy such as highlighting professional instead of personal hardship stories. In tactics I think a few transitions in my essay were not quite as clear as they should.

On the other hand, while seeing my material for other schools, they seemed stronger, so I need not lose hope.

I am not annoyed with HBS at all - if anything this shows that the outcomes are actually reflective of whether HBS saw things it wanted in the app.

Hope this clarifies!

I disagree... there's no need to be livid. Stats aren't everything, they are def. something, but they aren't everything. We don't know anything about this person's colleague, or this person...

... first generation to go to college ... underprivileged upbringing....

I can sympathize with you heavily because that's my background and I know first-hand how difficult it is to overcome that, but I really don't think any admissions committee member at a program like HBS is the least impressed by that. I don't think most of them -- who generally come from highly privileged backgrounds -- can appreciate the struggle involved with overcoming it, nor do I believe they find it to be "unique" enough.

FWIW, I emphasized this somewhat in my HBS app, but de-emphasized it in my subsequent apps to other programs. We'll see how it works out, but that was my thinking, and I'm not feeling any less confident in it after my ding from HBS.

Ceteris Paribus, my friend, ceteris paribus. I recognize that no man is omniscient and I also recognize that men have bad days and fleeting whim, which may have been the downfall of any of our attempts at the school.

Personally, I'm an "anti-establishment" kind of guy and a non-traditional candidate. Doesn't surprise me in the least. Just thought they'd want to see my face before they plunked down the red NO stamp on my app.

Good luck to you my friend. Ferocity of will is something that is more important than almost any other quality.

Dinged! 780 GMAT/3.75 GPA. 2 years work exp at a top bank but in an ok job, not highly selective which is probably what got me. Essay talked about how I am grateful for growing up in a low-income household because of the life lessons and diverse perspectives it has given me. I was expecting to be dinged though so I am not too worked up over it :)
