Hello pulak1988,

Thanks for writing in.

You have a diverse profile and the Admissions Committee will certainly appreciate the same. On the basis of our experience with helping successful candidates with diverse profiles albeit slightly low GMAT scores, we can tell you that you will have a good chance provided you portray a set of career goals wherein you leverage your experience in healthcare while avoiding a complete switch. Besides, the management experience at your very own clinic brings in relevant experience from the viewpoint of a business degree.

We would love to have a detailed discussion with you. Should you feel the need for a free profile evaluation, please drop us a personal message with your details and we will get in touch with you.

All the best!

Hi pulak1988

Healthcare profiles are welcome at ISB because they add to the diversity. Since you already have some management experience, it would be an advantage over your peers. However, with 6 years of experience, you're above the average work experience and your GMAT score of 650 might pull you down.

As more and more doctors apply to ISB every year, the pool is extremely competitive. To differentiate yourself, you need to show good leadership/business experience, extracurricular involvement in your application. Since there still is time, we urge you to give GMAT a second chance before you start working on your application. A GMAT of 680+ would boost your chances. Also, please consider applying to the one year Executive MBAs from IIM A/B/C.

Hi Abhi,

You have good work experience and impressive extra-curriculars. You should have a decent chance at ISB - obviously a coherent story with logical career goals will be the important thing.

Do get back on the improved GMAT score - that is one area I'd advise you t work upon before applying.

Hello basecamper09,

Thanks for writing in.

Your post grad from IIT, as well as, your involvement in global projects will add value to your profile. On the flip side, though, your GPA is not stellar and a higher GMAT score would have helped prove your academic prowess.

Your GMAT definitely meets the ISB average; however, you need to focus on putting forth a stellar set of essays, which highlight your strengths, articulate a set of logical career goals, and join the dots in your story in your appropriate manner.

The following video will help with the essays:

We would like to offer you a detailed profile evaluation for free; should you feel a need for the same, please feel free to reach out.

All the best!

Hi Akash,

What I need here is the details of your professional experience. You are involved in two businesses- what are your achievements at both? At the construction firm, how have you improved business? given that its a local firm, have you helped them improve/ streamline processes, decrease their bottom line, bring in more revenues? DO you have any achievements at your own firm? What are the challenges you have faced in setting this up (labour/ logistics)? What is the current growth?

Your work experience is obviously important for a business school, as they would want to ensure you are able to contribute your experiences and the challenges you faced to the class.

The other important thing for them to know is what your goals are and why are these your goals? I haven't understood them so well from your short description here, but would be happy to have a discussion over them You can reach out to me on email. Also, I'd like to bring some clarity on your short goals statement here- id you are looking at working at a strategy consulting firm, then you will not work with one infra or or tech company. You may work in the RE practice or the tech practice, but to begin with consultants join as generalists.

Its crucial you have understanding of the different career paths available. Any lack of knowledge here or irrational goals can easily see application filed dumped into the ding pile, so just a word of caution to really research your career goals.

Hi Namita, thanks for your reply.
I would like to highlight the following related my work experience with the Private Construction Firm -
Since I joined I steered the Online Bidding Processes for the company - finishing as the lowest bidder in numerous tenders amounting about 220 Crores (Approx) - the e-tendering process is a tedious job and involves a lot of study and documentation. Nevertheless, currently I'm working as a Site Engineer in one of the tenders - the profile of my current job is to look at certain sections of the work, that involves survey, calculations, managing the workers and look into the documentation work involved there. Yes, there are a lot of challenges involved here - managing the labour force is not an easy task, as in most cases people do either of the three things - Either they don't work at the rate at which they are supposed to, or they just flee off or they steal. It hasn't been easy and it'll never be. But, I'm upto the challenge.

Related my own firm and the contract awarded by the Indian Oil Corp. - I networked with a few people and with the help of my uncle, the permission was granted by the Contractors' Union to allow me participate in the 2017 LPG BULK TT Transportation. It was a whole new experience for me as I had to start right from issuing a trade license to ordering purchase of different components of the Tank Truck (TT) to financing a loan .. almost everything! And, after the tender was awarded to me i.e. for a period of 5 years .. I had to manage the running status, cash input-ouput etc. Here also, there are a certain challenges that I faced. Most often the drivers get laid back and don't run on time. So, I need to constantly monitor them through GPS, ensure that nothing gets stolen (which has actually happened initially, but was later tackled).

Career Goal wise I'd like to learn the possible avenues that are escalating in India and try to get insights and knowledge from the MBA experience so that later some years down the line I could come up with something unique, whenever I feel I'm ready.

So, could you please let me know what are my chances of getting through the admission process at ISB for the batch 2020 to 2022.

Well Aakash, I really like the details you just shared. here's what I will recommend, you should show the adcom through your essays and recommendation:
1. you are a go-getter, have an entrepreneurial spirit and can do attitude, and you are an achiever.
2. you need an MBA now to do even better in life.

You are a younger applicant, so proving to the adcom that you've already achieved a fair bit in life will be important. It would also help them visualize that you will continue your upward growth after the MBA. And which b-school doesn't want a successful alumnus?

A matured execution of your application will be super important. Reach out if you need help and best of luck.

If another shot at the GMAT will get the score up by 20+ points then I'd recommend that too. An average GPA and an average GMAT can be painful.

Hi coolnaren

Thanks for posting. Here is our assessment:
- You have a good role already in a top firm, and moving to a consulting role now will not be easy, even with an MBA. A strategy role in your company/industry, though, is certainly possible.
- Your GMAT at 630 will be low for ISB. In addition, you have over 13 years of experience, which may be too much for the ISB PGP (they may prefer you as a PGPMAX student). While ISB does have some professionals every year who are at your age/experience level for the PGP, they are more the exception.
- As of now, focus on increasing your GMAT score. If you can do that, IIMA/XLRI/Nanyang become options for you. You could also consider MBA programs for more experienced professionals like the Sloan Fellows programs.

Hope this helps. Feel free to come back with more queries as needed.
