On June 6, 1945, Allied commanders sent about 156,000 troops to the coast of France in Normandy and hoped a successful assault would ultimately lead to the eventual defeat of German forces throughout Europe.

a. Normandy and hoped a successful assault would ultimately lead to the eventual defeat of German forces throughout Europe

b. Normandy and hope a successful assault would ultimately lead to the defeat of German forces throughout Europe

c. Normandy, and they hoped a successful victorious assault would ultimately lead to the defeat of German forces throughout Europe

d. Normandy, and they hoped this successful assault would ultimately lead to the defeat of German forces throughout Europe

e. Normandy, and they hoped a successful assault would ultimately lead to the defeat of German forces throughout Europe --> correct

I think usage of "they" is ambiguous. A seems the best among all. Commanders are the subject of HOPED. Parallelism is maintained as well in A.

A is the answer.

Cutting the fluff..

Allied sent troops and hoped <a successful assault would ultimately lead to the eventual defeat of german>

Ultimately & eventual are redundant

b. Normandy and hope[ wrong tense - the statement is about 1945] a successful assault would ultimately lead to the defeat of German forces throughout Europe

c. Normandy, and they hoped a successful victorious [redundant]assault would ultimately lead to the defeat of German forces throughout Europe

d. Normandy, and they hoped this successful assault would ultimately lead to the defeat of German forces throughout Europe
the original statement is describing a condition to defeat the german forces.. This statement gurantees that this assualt will lead defeat. Unjustified change of meaning '

e. Normandy, and they hoped a successful assault would ultimately lead to the defeat of German forces throughout Europe

Hi Arup,
the choice A is wrong for 2 reasons - No subject for hoped and redundancy (ultimately and eventually). If you even attempt to correct it by removing redundancy, you will see that B has parallelism error, C has meaning change, D has meaning change ( a assualt versus this assualt ), making choice E as a clear winner. In choice E, the independent clause starts with a comma and ( ,and) followed by a clear subject "they". Agreed it has ambiguity, but then you have to realise it's not an official question (nothing beats it).

it's a good question, i wouldn't call it a 700 though.

Please press kudos if that helped.

Hello Gagoosh,

Thanks for your answer. I am also doubtful whether it is a 700 level question or not. I mentioned as the prep company marked this question very hard so I labeled this as 700.

Since E has ambiguity so shouldn't be A a better choice given it has only redundancy error but no grammatical error.

- Regards,
Arup Sarkar

A cannot be correct. 'they' unambiguously refers back to the subject - Allied Commanders. Even if that were incorrect, Option A would've been incorrect because it is redundant - ultimately...eventually.

They is unambiguous. As they is the subject of 2nd clause, it can jump and refer to the subject of first clause.

Allied commanders sent .......and hoped would be the right in my opinion. Why would one complicate the sentence and again use they? What is wrong with A? Please help!

You use either "ultimately" or "eventual" but not both.

For example, you cannot say "I want both A and B too."
Either say "I want both A and B" or say "I want A and B too"

So (A) is not correct.
(E) maintains parallelism too and is correct.

I think ambiguity of "They" should weigh higher in SC than redundancy of ultimately and eventually?

Please correct me if I am wrong if there's any exception to they ambiguity here.

TIA!!

Not sure why D is wrong here, is it because of ambiguous use of "this"?

Normandy, and they hoped a successful victorious assault would ultimately lead to the defeat of German forces throughout Europe

The sentence is wordy and hence in the presence of option (E) can be rejected !!!
