Between C and E, I think it's the island inspired those authors, not the person himself.

Explanation: main sentence/clause: RLS inspired generation... Dependent clause: whose Treasure Island demonstrated...

R L Stevenson, whose Treasure Island, a gripping tale of pirates and buried gold, demonstrated conflict between the virtue of advanced civilization and the indiscipline of man in his savage stage, inspiring generations of authors who wrote in significantly times than him.

A. demonstrated conflict between the virtue of advanced civilization and the indiscipline of man in his savage stage, inspiring generations of authors who wrote in significantly times than him. --> not a sentence

B. demonstrated conflict between the advanced civilization's virtue and the indiscipline of man in his savage stage and inspired generations of authors who wrote in significantly times than those in the book. --> dependent clause before "and"

C. demonstrated conflict between the virtue of advanced civilization and the indiscipline of man in his savage stage, inspired generations of authors who wrote in significantly times than his own. --> correct

D. demonstrated conflict between the virtue of advanced civilization and the indiscipline of man in his savage stage, and also inspired generations of authors who wrote in significantly times than his own. --> same as B

E. inspiring to generations of authors who wrote in significantly different times than his own, demonstrated conflict between the virtue of advanced civilization and the indiscipline of man in his savage stage. --> verb of the dependent clause should be "inspired"

Only C and D make the correct comparison-significantly times than his own.C is the better choice

Is there any error when posting the words "significantly times" in options A,B,C,D. If not then option E (though ambiguous) would be better for me

Option E is not an answer since it is a run-on sentence. You need a verb that goes to R.L Stevenson, not to Treasure Island. And this is why A,B,D and E are run-on sentences. Option C is the only correct choice. I doubt that this is 700+ level

No way. Read again. Treasure Island "demonstarated" right. But who insipred? I think Stevenson. If this is the case then "and also" is a wrong element because you need a verb before. For example, "R.L Stevenson, whose...demostarted..., motivated and also inspired" would be correct. Also would be correct option D but without "and also". Remember you always need a subject and a verb in a sentence. Option D has no verb for Stevenson.

l

It makes sense, as R L Stevenson .... inspired.. and whose treasure island.... demonstrated....

However, I do feel like we are missing the word different here in option A-D.

Yes, I think on the same lines and have chosen E, only to found it incorrect.

Roy, completely agreed. None of the options are correct—significantly is an adverb, which can only modify verbs, adjectives, adverbs, or whole sentences. It cannot modify 'times', a noun.

I suspect the word 'different' was omitted, which is quite frustrating because this question is unanswerable if we aren't able to identify the true error. Somehow it seems quite a few were able to get it right, but I'm not sure how!

You both are absolutely right; the original question has the term "different" in these answer choices.

We are sorry for the trouble you faced and it is frustrating to see such mistakes in our questions committed by the originators of these threads (it's the second I am seeing in last 5 minutes); Bunuel, bb, request you to please correct the original post.

Here is the official video explanation which also includes the correct answer choices--

C. demonstrated conflict between the virtue of advanced civilization and the indiscipline of man in his savage stage, inspired generations of authors who wrote in significantly different times than his own.

Could someone please explain why in answer choice C, "and" is not required before inspired.

To me it looks like a list, RL stevenson demonstrated...,(missing and) inspired

or it could be

RL stevenson demonstrated...., inspiring.....

Where am I going wrong?
