* Note - I usually do not like to post my timings, but am doing so in this RC to help a friend who contacted me regarding RCs. The idea is to get the point across that reading the passage slowly but comprehending it in the first go is a far superior approach than skimming. (Also I am not even sure if my answers are correct, so this may massively backfire, haha. Fingers crossed! )

Answers are in bold.

Time taken (read passage + question 1): 3:28
1. The passage provides information to answer all of the following questions EXCEPT:
(A) Are siblings necessary for the creation of multiple personality disorder?
(B) Will a trauma in a young child’s life guarantee the onset of multiple personality disorder?
(C) How does a child establish multiple personalities?
(D) What are some of the necessary preconditions for multiple personality disorder?
(E) How common is the occurrence of multiple personality disorder in the population?

Explanation of question 1
A - Siblings are not necessary. Pay attention to the word if in " If siblings are present". This means that if siblings are present then the parent has to behave in a certain way. That does not necessarily mean that siblings are a necessary condition (unlike trauma which the author mentions is a MUST).
B - Well no. Trauma will not guarantee Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). Why? Because if we look at the last line of the passage it clearly gives the explanation - "The above elements, while necessary for the rise of multiple personalities, do not guarantee that a child will develop multiple personalities."
C - The passage tells us the necessary conditions for a child to develop DID. But does the passage tell us how it develop? Also in the passage the author says it is not really known. Passage states - "Although the exact psychological mechanism that creates multiple personalities is not known"
D - Given. 1. Trauma before 7 years old, 2. One parent abusing, 3. Differential sibling treatment, 4. Parents in conflict
E - Rare. This is clearly mentioned here - “"Dissociative identity disorder,” or multiple personality disorder, is a rare psychological disorder in which an individual exhibits entirely different personalities and behaviors."

Time taken: 0:51
2. Which of the following individuals would be the most likely candidate for development of multiple personality disorder?
(A) A fifteen-year-old female runaway with two abusive parents and two poorlytreated siblings.
(B) A nine-year-old male with divorced parents and three well-treated sisters.
(C) A five-year-old female who lost both her parents in a car accident.
(D) A six-year-old male with one abusive parent and two well-treated brothers.
(E) A seven-year-old female with two abusive parents and no siblings.

Explanation of question 2
Now for this let us recall what the conditions are. More conditions means more chance of the child developing DID.
This is the list 1. Trauma before 7 years old, 2. One parent abusing, 3. Differential sibling treatment, 4. Parents in conflict
A - Immediately my eyes zoom in on - 2 abusing parents. Best case is 1 abusing parent. So this is a weak choice. Eliminate.
B - Again this one, 9 years old. I mean ideally you need a traumatic experience before 7. Out.
C - Ok, less than 7 years old - check. traumatic experience - check. We get 2 necessary conditions. We keep hold of this choice for the moment.
D - Less than 7 years - check, One abusive parent - check, two well treated bros - check. So well in this case we have 3 necessary conditions fulfilled. This means this is a stronger candidate than C. So we eliminate C at this point and hold on to D.
E - Weak choice, Two abusive parents - not ideal. Eliminate
We are left with D which is our answer.

3. In the passage, the author is primarily concerned with doing which of the following?
(A) Describing a psychiatric problem and proposing a solution.
(B) Presenting information and drawing conclusions from the information.
(C) Summarizing the current research into a common psychological disorder.
(D) Citing evidence to support a view.
(E) Discussing a phenomenon and several factors required for its development.

Explanation of question 3
A - Author does not propose any solution. Out.
B - While the author does present information, no conclusion is drawn.
C - Think this is distorting the meaning of the passage. Author does not try to summarise all into one common physiological disorder, he merely discusses one disorder.
D - I really don't think that author is citing evidence to support a view. He has a neutral viewpoint, but stating facts.
E - Phenomenon - DID, Several factors - discussed the necessary factors for its development - trauma, conflicting parents etc.

Time taken: 0:31
4. Which of the following factors is required for the development of dissociative personality disorder?
I. Parental conflict
II. Different parental treatment of siblings, if siblings are present
III. Early childhood trauma
(A) I only
(B) II only
(C) I and II only
(D) I and III only
(E) I, II, and III

Explanation of question 4
I - Parental conflict is stated here - "First, the parents of the child must be in conflict,"
II - Stated here - "Second, if siblings are present, they must be treated differently (and generally better) by the parents than the dissociated child. "
III - Stated here - "psychiatrists have agreed that a severe emotional trauma must occur prior to age seven,"
Hence the answer is E, all three statements are factors required to develop DID.

Correct Answer - E,
Explanation - This is the only question, the answer to which we cannot infer from the passage, as nothing is metioned w.r.t to the question.
Options A,B,C,D - all of the questions can we answered referring the passage.

Correct Answer - D,
Explanation - w.r.t what's mentioned in the passage:"In addition to this trauma, certain familial elements must be present. First, the parents of the child must be in conflict, essentially playing opposing, warring roles in the child’s life. Typically, this is manifested by one parent abusing the child and the other parent denying or ignoring the abuse. Second, if siblings are present, they must be treated differently (and generally better) by the parents than the dissociated child. "
Implying that in addition to severe trauma, if a child has abusive parents, one or both, and well treated siblings in addition to the child, that, the child might develop multiple personality disorder.
So when we look at the options, D seems to be most close to developing multiplr personality disorder.
Option A - incorrect, as this disorder mostly develops in children before the age of 7, 15 year old girl might not develop them, and we cannot infer if her conditions have been persisting since long time.
Option B - incorrect, reasoning same as A.
Option C, E - incorrect, it could be, but we cannot say that for sure, since the children might or might not develop the symptoms.

Correct Answer - E,
Explanation - In the passage, author mentions 1 disorder and in the complete passage, discusses the factors that might cause the development of that disorder.
Option A - incorrect, as no solution is proposed.
Option B - incorrect, no specific conclusions are drawn, just the discussion of research in the development of the disorder which might or might not happen.
Option C - incorrect, out of scope w.r.t the passage.
Option D - incorrect, it not an evidence, just a discussion of a psychological disorder.

4. Which of the following factors is required for the development of dissociative personality disorder?

I. Parental conflict
II. Different parental treatment of siblings, if siblings are present
III. Early childhood trauma

(A) I only
(B) II only
(C) I and II only
(D) I and III only
(E) I, II, and III

Correct Answer - E,
Explanation - All 3 factors can be clearly inferred from the passage, which makes E as the correct answer and rest of the other options incorrect.

1. The passage provides information to answer all of the following questions EXCEPT:

(A) Are siblings necessary for the creation of multiple personality disorder? The passage states, "Second, if siblings are present, they must be treated differently...". The highlighted part shows that siblings are not necessary, but if they are present, they should be better treated than the subject.
(B) Will a trauma in a young child’s life guarantee the onset of multiple personality disorder? The last part of the passage mentions that all the above-mentioned conditions are necessary but do not guarantee the development of multiple personalities. Thus, we know that a trauma will still not guarantee the multiple personality disorder.
(C) How does a child establish multiple personalities? This question hasn't been answered and hence is the correct option. In fact it is stated that, "Although the exact psychological mechanism that creates multiple personalities is not known, psychiatrists have.... So go for this."

(D) What are some of the necessary preconditions for multiple personality disorder? The passage is all about mentioning a few necessary pre-conditions for the multiple personality disorder. So this question is duly answered by the passage.
(E) How common is the occurrence of multiple personality disorder in the population? The first line of the passage mentions that the disorder is 'rare'. "“Dissociative identity disorder,” or multiple personality disorder, is a rare psychological disorder..." So this option is incorrect.

2. Which of the following individuals would be the most likely candidate for development of multiple personality disorder?

PRE-THINKING: The factors are divided in categories. First, a trauma. And second, familial circumstances. We need an option that involves both of these.

(A) A fifteen-year-old female runaway with two abusive parents and two poorlytreated siblings. If both siblings are poorly treated, then according to the passage, this won't affect the subject very differently. It is mentioned that the subject should generally, be treated in a worse fashion than siblings.
(B) A nine-year-old male with divorced parents and three well-treated sisters. This is correct. This involves both a trauma (divorce) and familial circumstances (Well-treated sisters compared to the subject). We still need to make a small assumption that the trauma happened before the age 7. Looks to me the closest option possible.

(C) A five-year-old female who lost both her parents in a car accident. This only involves a trauma, but not familial circumstances.
(D) A six-year-old male with one abusive parent and two well-treated brothers. This only includes familial circumstances but not emotional trauma. Hence, incorrect.
(E) A seven-year-old female with two abusive parents and no siblings. Out of scope as it does not involve trauma. Besides, the parents need to have warring instructions, which is absent in this case.

3. In the passage, the author is primarily concerned with doing which of the following?

(A) Describing a psychiatric problem and proposing a solution. The passage does discuss about a psychiatric problem, but is not proposing a solution to it. Hence incorrect.
(B) Presenting information and drawing conclusions from the information. The passage is not drawing conclusions but just stating facts and listing necessary factors. Reject.
(C) Summarizing the current research into a common psychological disorder. The psychological disorder is not common. The passage states that it is rare. Hence, reject.
(D) Citing evidence to support a view. The passage does not cite any evidence anywhere. Hence, reject.
(E) Discussing a phenomenon and several factors required for its development. Correct. The passage discusses a phenomenon (Dissociative personality disorder) and lists down the factors required for its development.

4. Which of the following factors is required for the development of dissociative personality disorder?

I. Parental conflict
II. Different parental treatment of siblings, if siblings are present
III. Early childhood trauma

(A) I only
(B) II only
(C) I and II only
(D) I and III only
(E) I, II, and IIIAll the above 3 are mentioned in the passage. Parental conflict mentioned ("First, the parents of the child must be in conflict..."). Point II is mentioned in this sentence ("Second, if siblings are present, they must be treated differently (and generally better) by the parents..."). Point III is mentioned in this sentence ("Although the exact psychological mechanism that creates multiple personalities is not known, psychiatrists have agreed that a severe emotional trauma must occur prior to age seven..."). Hence option E is correct.
