“Dissociative identity disorder,” or multiple personality disorder, is a rare psychological disorder in which an individual exhibits entirely different personalities and behaviors. Although the exact psychological mechanism that creates multiple personalities is not known, psychiatrists have agreed that a severe emotional trauma must occur prior to age seven, the age at which a child’s mind matures into a unified identity. In addition to this trauma, certain familial elements must be present. First, the parents of the child must be in conflict, essentially playing opposing, warring roles in the child’s life. Typically, this is manifested by one parent abusing the child and the other parent denying or ignoring the abuse. Second, if siblings are present, they must be treated differently (and generally better) by the parents than the dissociated child. This difference in treatment is critical since it shows the dissociated child that he or she is “different” and undeserving of love and other emotional valuation. If all children in a family are treated in a similar fashion, then multiple personality disorder will not tend to occur. The above elements, while necessary for the rise of multiple personalities, do not guarantee that a child will develop multiple personalities.
