The sentence should read: "more than three times as many cooking fires occur due to the improper use of gas-powered grills as those occurring due to the incorrect handling of solid-fuel powered grills." This maintains parallel structure and clarity in the comparison.

The correct option is D) as those occurring.

The correct choice is D) imo.

The sentence structure requires a comparison using "as" to parallel the phrase "more than three times." The correct form is "more than three times as many... as those occurring." This maintains parallelism in the comparison.

According to a recent study conducted by fire safety experts, on behalf of a major insurance provider, more than three times as many cooking fires occur due to the improper use of gas powered grills than those that occur due to the incorrect handling of solid-fuel powered grills.

A) than those that occur
B) than are occurring
C) than to occur
D) as those occurring
E) as occur

We are being tested on idioms.
as many as

Therefore, A, B & C are out.

E) as occur would be incorrect. We need a noun/pronoun for comparison.

D) as those occurring is correct. We have "those" for comparison.

D is the correct answer.

Experts' Global Official Explanation:

Comparison + Idioms + Parallelism + Meaning

    • “as A as B” is a correct, idiomatic usage.
    • Any elements linked by a conjunction (“than” in this sentence) must be parallel.

A. Trap. This answer choice incorrectly uses the unidiomatic construction “as A than B” rather than the idiomatic construction “as A as B”; please remember, “as A as B” is a correct, idiomatic usage. Further, Option A fails to maintain parallelism between “occur due to…” and “those that occur due to …”; please remember, any elements linked by a conjunction (“than” in this sentence) must be parallel.

B. This answer choice incorrectly uses the unidiomatic construction “as A than B” rather than the idiomatic construction “as A as B”; please remember, “as A as B” is a correct, idiomatic usage. Further, Option B fails to maintain parallelism between “occur due to…” and “are occurring due to …”; please remember, any elements linked by a conjunction (“than” in this sentence) must be parallel.

C. This answer choice incorrectly uses the unidiomatic construction “as A than B” rather than the idiomatic construction “as A as B”; please remember, “as A as B” is a correct, idiomatic usage. Further, Option C fails to maintain parallelism between “occur due to…” and “to occur due to…”; please remember, any elements linked by a conjunction (“than” in this sentence) must be parallel.

D. Trap. This answer choice fails to maintain parallelism between “cooking fires occur due to…” and “those occurring due to …”; please remember, any elements linked by a conjunction (“as” in this sentence) must be parallel.

E. Correct. This answer choice correctly uses the idiomatic construction “as A as B”. Further, Option E maintains parallelism between “occur due to the improper use of…” and “occur due to the incorrect handling of…”.

E is the best answer choice.

Was not positive on this one because the sentence itself felt a little clunky, but I think E

To simplify the wordiness, I replace 'the improper use of gas powered grills' with x and let's run through these

A) than those that occur
B) than are occurring
C) than to occur
D) as those occurring
E) as occur

A - more than three times as many cooking fires occur due to x than those that occur due to the incorrect handling of solid-fuel powered grills -- we don't need to refer to those again because we are still referring to the cooking fires from the first part of the clause

B - more than three times as many cooking fires occur due to x than are occuring due to the incorrect handling of solid-fuel powered grills -- really mixing tenses here with 'occur' and 'than are occuring' which makes it sound ongoing

C - more than three times as many cooking fires occur due to x than to occur due to the incorrect handling of solid-fuel powered grills -- the to here does not make sense with the sentence

D - more than three times as many cooking fires occur due to x as those occuring due to the incorrect handling of solid-fuel powered grills - again, we have the those issue

E - more than three times as many cooking fires occur due to x as occur due to the incorrect handling of solid-fuel powered grills -- I might use than occur, but as occur here keeps the tense the same and doesn't introduce any of the same clunky wording

A) as mane...than is incorrect construction
B) are occurring is incorrect tense. It means that the fires are currently occurring as we speak
C) to occur is not appropriate to use here
D) those correctly refers to the fires. 'as' is correctly used
E) 'as occur' is not parallel, nor does it fit with the rest of the sentence.

Let's analyze each option:

A) than those that occur

- The use of "those that occur" is somewhat redundant.

B) than are occurring

- This option introduces the present continuous tense with "are occurring." While grammatically correct, it changes the emphasis and alter the meaning of the sentence.

C) than to occur

- This option introduces the infinitive phrase "to occur." However, it does not maintain parallelism with the phrase "due to the incorrect handling," and it may not be as idiomatic.

D) as those occurring

- This option maintains parallelism with the phrase "as occur," and it is concise. It effectively communicates the comparison between the number of cooking fires due to gas-powered grills and those occurring due to solid-fuel powered grills.

E) as occur

- This option is concise and maintains parallelism. But option (D) is grammatically correct.

Therefore, the correct answer is D) as those occurring.
