Now I’m worried about my interviewer. I’m not Indian, but my interviewer is a US-based Indian alum in a totally different job function than what I’m pursuing. And I’m a bit of a nontraditional applicant. Any tips?

All of this discussion is making me regret getting such a reviewer. Although it might or might not be true, I'm not in a position to risk it. If this had been known yesterday, I would've selected Ann Arbor for my location and given an interview at 4 AM, rather than having it with an inherently tougher interviewer.

Don’t let your fear of the interviewer disrupt the whole interview process. At the end of the day, they have a pretty standard set of questions to ask you. Some may "grill" you more than others with follow-ups, but as long as you have valid reasons / proof / understanding for the things you talk about, you should be fine regardless of the interviewer.
