Journalist's recommendation: local outlets should move towards hyperlocal investigative journalism.
Goal: gain community relationship advantage as opposed to infrastructure over conglomerates.
blank: why does following this recommendation help achieve this goal. This is a strengthen question.

A) provides no new information, passage already says these are not in reach of local outlets. does not support the recommendation or provide reasoning for why following this recommendation will help achieve the goal. incorrect
B) if local outlets are better positioned to cultivate the community trust that hyperlocal investigative journalism requires compared to conglomerates, then it is a very good reason to follow journalist's recommendation to achieve the goal of gaining competitive advantage over conglomerates. correct
C) this could be true for either local outlet or conglomerates' journalists, hence it is not a good reason that strengthens following the stated recommendation. incorrect
D) this is a reason not to follow the journalist's recommendation, so this weakens the argument. incorrect
E) the goal is to gain community relationship advantage so that local outlets do not have to compete with conglomerates at infrastructure, at which they cannot beat them. The goal is not to attract national attention or make more money. hence this option talks about another goal outside of what argument states. incorrect.

Investigative stories focusing on local institutions have repeatedly proven capable of attracting national attention and significant other advertising revenue, so local outlets should focus on hyperlocal investigative journalism.

The word 'since' indicates we need to fill the blank with a possible reason as to why local outlets should focus on local investigative journalism.

(A) Cost is out of scope
(B) Correct: Since local outlets employ fewer workers. There is a possibilty that they will be able to build better sustained community relationships and the trust that comes with it.
(C) This doesn't given the local guys an edge. What if there are people from the national conglomerates whom residents know personally over many years and whom they choose to trust ?
(D) Again what the national conglomerates are doing, doesn't provide any reason why the local guys should pursue the investigateive journalism route.
(E) This talks about investigative stories. This could be done by the national conglomerates as wel. So this doesn't provide the local guys an edge. Additionally, the argument is not about which mode of journalism is more lucrative.

Bunuel
Journalist: Local news outlets typically employ no more than a handful of reporters. The infrastructure required to cover breaking national and global stories - foreign correspondents, wire subscriptions, and rapid production systems - is beyond the reach of most local outlets. Thus, local news outlets cannot effectively compete with large national media conglomerates on breaking news. So local outlets should focus instead on hyperlocal investigative journalism, which depends on sustained community relationships rather than large-scale infrastructure, since __________.

Which of the following most logically completes the journalist's argument?

(A) the cost of maintaining foreign correspondents and wire subscriptions has risen sharply over the past decade

(B) local outlets are better positioned than national conglomerates to cultivate the community trust that such journalism requires

(C) residents of a community are more likely to share sensitive information with journalists they have come to know personally over many years

(D) national media conglomerates have recently begun launching community outreach initiatives aimed at strengthening their ties with local audiences

(E) investigative stories focusing on local institutions have repeatedly proven capable of attracting national attention and significant advertising revenue

close call between B and C, both can suggest why local outlets should focus on local news
But I think B is stronger since it clearly shows that local outlet are advantageous on this one, while C doesn't guarantee that, for example what if the journalists in choice C are all large conglomerate based?

The conclusion here is that local outlets should focus on hyperlocal investigative journalism. (I found it useful in prep for gmat is to take questions and see if you can write out the conclusion in 30 seconds before even looking at the options)

The missing statement needs to explain why local outlets have a competitive advantage in that area.

B does exactly that, as it mentions the local outlets are better positioned that national conglomerates to cultivate community tryst that such journalism requires.

Why not others?

A repeats whats already mentioned about not being able to compete
C explains why long term personal relationships help investigative journalism, but it does not explicitly establish local outlets are better than national conglomerates at developing those relationships.
D weakens the claimed advantage of the local outlets that the argument is trying to make, also launching outreach initiative does not establish that local outlets should focus on this field.

E is a clear benefit of local stories, but the argument focuses on comparative advantages, but does not show that local outlets are especially well positioned to produce such stories.

The passage makes a point of saying due to resource restrictions, global news is out of reach for most local outlets. Hence local outlets should stick to local investigative news, which relies on relations than infra prowess, because _______.

Here, the reason author suggests why it makes sense for local outlets to focus on local news is the relationship which local outlets can better build. Any option that is on these lines would be a good fit.

A. I did not go ahead with this option because the question mentions infra limitations as reason for local networks to not have correspondents etc. The reason might be cost or something else (like lower brand recall etc) due to which this limitation might exist.
C. I rejected this one because even global outlet correspondents can have long standing relations with locals. It simply says the type of journalist not the type of outlets those journalists will belong to
D. If global outlets have already started local outreach also, doing the same won't create any edge or differentiation for local outlets. Hence this option did not make sense.
E. Attention or revenue potential are not discussed as relevant decision criteria in the question stem

B. Best option IMO. If local outlets are better positioned than global ones to cultivate the trust that makes the local investigative journalism a success, doing this kind of journalism has high chance of giving the local outlets an edge or fighting chance.

A - This talks more about costs which is not relevant for explaining the first statement.

B - CORRECT ANSWER: This explanation gives us why locals should focus on hyperlocal investigative journalism, which is the previous statement.

C - Yes, but even a journalist might not have enough connections or know enough people to cover different topics effectively.
D - This doesn't support the journalist's previous statement.
E - This only discusses recognition and its consequences, but it doesn't directly explain how local outlets can do this job better.

A) No,rising cost is irrelevant
B) Yes, it tells what they have that large national media conglomerates don't
C) No, doesn't mean they're from local news outlet
D) no, weakens
E) No, because it's not about advertisement revenue & traffic but USP vs national conglomerates

Local news outlets - employ few reporters - have a smaller budget to work with - therefore can't afford infrastructure required for breaking news and global stories.
And hence, they can't possibly compete with large national media conglomerates on breaking news and global stories.

Therefore, local outlets should focus on local investigative journalism - which depends on community relationships over infrastructure, since ___
This is the argument we need to complete. Hence, we need to find an option which ties together community relationships with something in which local news outlets will have leverage over large national media.
The option which perfectly matches this description is B.

The rest of the options are irrelevant since they don't logically continue the flow of the argument in a way that local news outlets have an advantage over national conglomerates in terms of community relations.

Hence, the final answer is B.

Passage talks about local news outlets' lack of infrastructure for breaking stories compared to Large media conglomerates. So Author suggested Local news outlet should play on their strength, which is more interaction with local community than the national conglomerates. it can help in local investigative journalism. According to question stem we need to find right premise which can fit into Author conclusion.
A - Eliminate (Out of context) - They were already out of reach for this kind of infrastucture , rising cost won't ahve impact on the local news outlet.
B- Selected - This option talks about community trust for which local news outlet is better position than National conglomerates . also showed strength of Local outlet over national conglomerates
C- Eliminate - This is true and applicable for both Local and National. It doesn't show the strength of local news outlet over National conglomerates.
D- Eliminate - This will weaken the strength of local news outlet and conclusion of Author.
E- Eliminate - Nothing mentioned in passage related to this.

A-Incorrect: Talks about rising cost of breaking news infrastructure but doesn't show why hyperlocal journalism is the better focus.
B-correct: this bridges the gap by showing that local outlets possess a comparative advantage where it matters for the strategy.
C-incorrect: this explains why community trust is important for investigative journalism in general but does not specify why local outlets are capable of cultivating that relationship compared to national conglomerates.
D- incorrect: Could even weaken the argument by suggesting national outlets are improving their local ties.
E-incorrect: discusses revenue and attention not the comparative advantage established in the argument.

My answer is E.)

We need to complete the argument by providing the assumption. Indicator- Since

Author says local news outlets cannot compete in breaking news, So, it should cover local news. We need to find a reason how local news can compete with breaking news.

A) This option does not tell why local news outlets should cover local news- Eliminate
B) This option says that local outlets are better positioned but how it can compete is not clear- Eliminate
C) Same as above- Eliminate
D) This is weakening the conclusion instead of providing evidence to support the conclusion- Eliminate
E) This option clearly talks about significant revenue from local news which means local news can compete with breaking news- CORRECT.

B) Local outlets are better ....
This is the correct one as according to the statement we are checking the positive side of local news so as in the statement given that local news depends on community relationships rather than infra so this point gives more weight to this statement

why other are not the sol
A) The cost has always been unaffordable for local news so increasing cost is not the major problem it has also to do with infrastructure and it does not support the fill in the blanks statement

C) the residents are likely to share sensitive information yes that can be true but it contradicts the statement as sensitive information is not a local news thing but rather a journalist thing and this can be a one time thing as well not something to rely on

D) this will make the statement claims weak so this cannot be used as it is suggesting that the foreign news people are trying to increase their ties with locals

E) Argument is not about revenue but rather advantages of local news

The conclusion is that local outlets should focus on hyperlocal investigative journalism instead of competing on breaking news.
The missing link is : Why are local outlets better suited for that kind of journalism?

A is irrelevant. Higher infrastructure costs explain why breaking news is difficult, not why local journalism is the better focus. Eliminate
B sounds right. If local outlets are better positioned to build the community trust that hyperlocal investigative journalism depends on, then focusing on that area is a logical strategy. Keep
C is too narrow. It explains one benefit of long-term relationships, but not why local outlets are better than national outlets at building them. Eliminate
D weakens the argument. If national outlets are improving their local ties, the advantage of local outlets becomes smaller. Eliminate
E is out of scope. Even if local investigations attract national attention, that doesn't explain why local outlets should focus on them. Eliminate

Ans : B

The local news outlets cannot compete with national media conglomerates on breaking news, because they don't have the infrastructure.

So, in order to sustain, local news outlets must focus on areas where they are at advantageous position compared to national conglomerates.

The Option B talks about this.

"local outlets are better positioned than national conglomerates to cultivate the community trust that such journalism requires" Ans. B

A--- Talks about cost, ignore.
B---This is correct as it connects the community cultivation and compares to national conglomerate.
C--Very close, but sensitive information should not be shared, as it may impact hence this falls off.
D---Irrelevant to us
E---It talks about revenue, again not a contributing factor to complete the entire passage, drop.

Hence B is the correct answer.

so let see what passage is saying
passage basically says: local news can't afford the big infrastructure for global news, so they lose to national giants. conclusion: they should do hyperlocal investigative stuff b/c it relies on community relationships instead of expensive stuff.

we need to fill the blank to show why this shift actually helps them beat the big guys. let's just use hit and trial on the options.

A just explains why global news is expensive. doesn't say why local investigative is the right move.
B is perfect. it directly says local outlets r way better at building that community trust than national conglomerates. it gives them the exact competitive edge they need.
C is a trap. it explains how trust works but totally misses the comparison. what if national giants just hire those trusted local journalists? B is stronger b/c it directly compares local vs national.
D actually weakens the whole thing. if big guys r building local ties, local news is doomed there too.
E says local stories make money, but misses the main point about infrastructure vs relationships.

the ans will be (B).
