A) strengthens the argument b/c if fish prefer to lay eggs on bare reefs, yet lesser intact eggs were found there, it strengthens the belief that algae facilitates fish reproduction.
B) if the non-suitability of bare reefs was from abrasion damage then the fewer eggs found on bare reefs was due to abrasion damage and not due to lack of algae. this weakens the argument that lesser intact eggs were found on bare reefs b/c of lack of algae. correct.
C) directly strengthens the conclusion.
D) this is quite a tempting option. it would have been a weakener if it also explicitly stated that eggs from bare reefs had higher proportion of hatched eggs, but since it does not mention that and just makes general statement hence it does have any impact on argument as is.

Algae- naturally covers large sections of coral reefs - used by lots of fish species as a surface to lay and protect their eggs.
Researchers want to test whether algae coverage affects where and how successfully fish lay eggs.
They selected 20 reef sections and scraped off all the algae from half of them - left half undisturbed.

A - preference is not a strong enough indicator to undermine conclusion since evidently enough, fish also lay eggs on reef with algae.
B - CORRECT. This undermines conclusion saying another factor is responsible and the experiment is not reliable enough to draw that conclusion.
C - supports the conclusion as to how algae facilitates the laying and protection of eggs.

Premise: fish prefer to lay eggs on algae-covered surface.
Experiment: scraping half of the surface to test where and how successfully the fish lay eggs.
Result: More eggs laid on algae-covered area.
Conclusion: Algae facilitates fish reproduction.

Reasoning: in order to have result that is trustworthy, experiment (on sample) must have similar conditions to the observed premise. However, as they scraped aka. disturbed the surface, the conditions are no longer the same, as disturbing the nature would likely cause the appearance of additional factors (i.e. damaging the surface). Therefore, in order to undermine the reasoning, answer should have mentioned those additional factors.

A-B-C all help the cause and do not undermine it.

D- Is something which is irrelevant.

E- Strikes correctly, in case there are too much algae, less of O2 will be there, hence difficult for fish to breathe and lay eggs, hence they will move away from these locations. Hence E is our answer here.

To weaken researcher's conclusion, we have to ensure whether any other things could change when researcher's removed algae.

(A) Researchers are looking for intact eggs, they are not looking for whether fish lay eggs on bare or reef sections. Eliminate.

So we need something that undermines this statement
