Dear VeritasKarishma

In Strengthening Question, when I negate an option and the negated version weakens the conclusion, will that option be considered a correct strengthener?

Thank you for all your replies :)

varotkorn

Not necessarily. The option could be neutral but negating it could weaken the conclusion. To look for a strengthener, negating does not help because strengtheners are not necessary for the conclusion to hold. Even if they don't hold, the conclusion could still hold. The only time we use negating is in assumption questions. That said, I prefer to look for a gap between premises and conclusion in assumption questions. Negating can get too tiresome so I use it in very few questions.

Thank you for your reply.

I have one more question:
When you say "The option could be neutral but negating it could weaken the conclusion", if the negated option weakens the conclusion, (instead of being neutral) won't that option be considered an assumption and hence a strengthener?

Appreciate your help !

A negated assumption has to break the conclusion, not just weaken it.
An assumption is necessary. A negated assumption breaks the conclusion such that the conclusion cannot hold.

A weakener just weakens the conclusion i.e. makes it less likely. A weakener may not break the conclusion.

Don't get lost in 'negating the option strategy'. As I said before, it is useful ONLY for assumption questions and that too, not very often. Invest your time in identifying gaps.

Thank you a lot Ma'am VeritasKarishma

I would highly appreciate it if you could provide an example in which the statement is neutral but when negating it could weaken the conclusion. I cannot come up with that scenario at all.

Thank you for your patience and generosity :-)
(and so sorry for causing you inconvenience Ma'am)

Take a simplistic deductive logic scenario.

A, B and C are necessary for D.

Given: A happens.
Can we say anything about D? No. D may or may not happen.

Negate it: A does not happen.
Now we can say that D does not happen.

A similar reasoning could be applied to real life examples in CR questions. Don't look for absolute rules to solve Verbal - a lot depends on context, the other options etc.

Dear Ma'am VeritasKarishma

According to your example, A, B and C are the assumptions for D. So, if an option says A happens, that option would be an assumption and hence also a strengthener even though, as you mentioned, D may or may not happen. However, stating that A happens gives additional evidence/support for D. Is my understanding correct here?

Thank you :-)

No, A, B and C are given to be necessary conditions. (An assumption is a missing necessary premise.)
The example shows that a statement (say A) may not prove something but its negation may disprove it.
Similar effect may be seen from another statement which may not strengthen a conclusion but its negation may weaken it.

Hi VeritasKarishma,

How practice can improve CR score?
Do , after doing hundreds of CR questions, we will start thinking similarly to the test makers ? What is the assumption of that? Is the assumption that the CR questions follow some sort of well defined boundaries or patterns??
How many hundreds of CR questions practice do you consider sufficient to be master in CR, assuming that we thoroughly learn from our mistakes , made in that process?
Please explain in detail, especially about the boundary part.

Regards,

Basim
