A steady increase in the percentage of carbohydrates in pulses – edible seeds of the legume family – available in the market of country Z has been observed over the past 10 years. There are two common reasons for a change in the nutritional composition of seeds in a plant: change in nutrition provided to the plants such as through fertilizers, and the use of genetically modified plants that produce such different yield. Since there was no change in the kind of fertilizers used, the farmers in the country have likely resorted to some genetically modified crops.
Which of the following most seriously weakens the argument?
A.There has been no discernible change in the carbohydrate content of the pulses available in the market.
B.Country Z - a highly industrialized country – has been experiencing significant increases in carbon dioxide in its air, a gas that has increasingly suppressing effect on a plant’s ability to synthesize and store other macro components in the yield.
C.The water supplied for irrigation has higher concentrations of minerals vital in aiding the plant’s capacity to absorb nutrients from the soil.
D.Genetic engineering is known to alter the nutritional composition of the crops when fertilizers are used indiscriminately on such crops.
E.The increased carbohydrate percentage is an indicator that genetic modifications can seriously impact the food habits of people who now have to look for other sources of protein-rich food.
OA-B
I was confused b/w option B,C and D
I chose D because the conclusion says that "Since there was no change in the kind of fertilizers used, the farmers in the country have likely resorted to some genetically modified crops."
Option D says that it was not just the effect of genetically modified crops but the use of fertilizers indiscriminately.
