Hi VeritasKarishma VeritasKarishma VeritasKarishma VeritasKarishma

Earlier this year, our city’s three main reservoirs had unusually low water levels. As a result, city officials initiated a program that encouraged residents to reduce their water usage by 20 percent. Since the program was announced, the water level at all three reservoirs has returned to normal. Our city officials should be applauded for their role in preventing a crisis.

Which of the following, if true, casts the most doubt on the efficacy of the officials’ program?

(A). The current water level in the reservoirs is lower than it was at the same time last year.

(B). Other nearby reservoirs recovered from lower water levels this year, even though those reservoirs provide water to cities that did not enact water restriction policies.

(C). Residents reduced their water usage for lawn maintenance significantly more than they did for washing clothes.

(D). Imposing stiff penalties on residents who did not conserve water would have resulted in even higher water levels in the reservoirs.

(E). Water usage in the city dropped steadily during the first two weeks of the program before leveling off.

My doubt out here is between A & B
can we eliminate an answer ( i.e a) only on the basis of contradiction to the statement given in the argument
Like option A is exactly opposite of what is given in the argument so it does actually weaken the argument but i am confused

Hey Nums99,

I apologise for the delayed reply.

Option (A) is not against the argument at all. The argument talks about "this year". Earlier this year and now.
Option (A) talks about same time LAST year. It is irrelevant.

A steady increase in the percentage of carbohydrates in pulses – edible seeds of the legume family – available in the market of country Z has been observed over the past 10 years. There are two common reasons for a change in the nutritional composition of seeds in a plant: change in nutrition provided to the plants such as through fertilizers, and the use of genetically modified plants that produce such different yield. Since there was no change in the kind of fertilizers used, the farmers in the country have likely resorted to some genetically modified crops.

Which of the following most seriously weakens the argument?

A.There has been no discernible change in the carbohydrate content of the pulses available in the market.

B.Country Z - a highly industrialized country – has been experiencing significant increases in carbon dioxide in its air, a gas that has increasingly suppressing effect on a plant’s ability to synthesize and store other macro components in the yield.

C.The water supplied for irrigation has higher concentrations of minerals vital in aiding the plant’s capacity to absorb nutrients from the soil.

D.Genetic engineering is known to alter the nutritional composition of the crops when fertilizers are used indiscriminately on such crops.

E.The increased carbohydrate percentage is an indicator that genetic modifications can seriously impact the food habits of people who now have to look for other sources of protein-rich food.

OA-B

I was confused b/w option B,C and D
I chose D because the conclusion says that "Since there was no change in the kind of fertilizers used, the farmers in the country have likely resorted to some genetically modified crops."
Option D says that it was not just the effect of genetically modified crops but the use of fertilizers indiscriminately.

Despite the best efforts of our national soccer league, the city of Ashton refuses to adequately support its professional franchise, which has the lowest ratings, revenue, and season ticket sales of any in the league. Therefore it is clear that Ashton is not interested in soccer.

Which of the following, if true, would most weaken the argument?

A. Ashton’s franchise has been in existence for over twenty years.
B. Ashton is nationally renowned for its professional basketball team, perhaps the most successful in the history of the country.
C. Ashton has two long established collegiate soccer programs that dominate media coverage in the city.
D.Ashton has the lowest average income per capita of any city in the league.
E. Ashton has refused to build a new stadium to support the franchise.

OA-C

VeritasKarishma this is q question from Veritas question bank. I am really confused b/w C and D
Although it seems both weaken the conclusion

(D) doesn't weaken the conclusion. Say there are 10 teams in the league. Ashton is ranked 10th according to per capita income but it could still be a rich city.

In this question, b/w option A and E
Here conclusion is "It is no wonder our society is so violent and so many Americans feel a deep sense of isolation and overwhelming stress."
I think both A and E would be farfetched assumptions. Your thoughts??

These questions from unknown sources are usually a waste of time. It is quite difficult to make good quality CR questions.
