I came across a question in PR test which goes like this..
Individuals who undergo plastics surgery often experience a period of depression immediately after the surgery, because pain is high and aesthetic benefits are temporarily low as the body's tissues recover from the trauma of an operation.
The above sentence is correct.. The part which I didnt get is that... Because X is high and Ys are low... Is this correct comparison?

it is perfectly fine in parallelism..
ONLY thing is that the two portions should be same ..
NOUN with NOUN..... VERB with verb ..... CLAUSE with clause and so on

Technically you are not comparing two things in that example; instead, you are stating two separate facts. For example, "my exam (singular) is near and my classes (plural) are difficult."
In my opinion it would in fact be poor usage to compare A to Bs (singular to plural or vice-versa). Instead, compare A to A (singular to singular) and Bs to Bs (plural to plural) whenever possible.
