I came across a question in PR test which goes like this..

Individuals who undergo plastics surgery often experience a period of depression immediately after the surgery, because pain is high and aesthetic benefits are temporarily low as the body's tissues recover from the trauma of an operation.

The above sentence is correct.. The part which I didnt get is that... Because X is high and Ys are low... Is this correct comparison?

Pain is high and benefits are low... There is no comparison.

Yes as long as they are parallel. They are both nouns so that is fine.

Parallelism rules dictate that all the items must be of the same category:
1-all nouns
2-all verbs
3-all gerunds
4-all adjectives
5-all adverbs

and so on.

There's nothing inherently wrong in comparing a singular noun with a plural noun. The example you've taken doesn't, however, involve a comparison.
