Is it possible to score very high on just one/two verbal section? Or are you "capped" on question difficulty if you are doing poorly on the other sections? I'm asking as I took the GMAT a couple weeks ago and thought I was doing very well on CR and SC, which are my strong points. I ended up scoring V38 and when I saw my ESR, I scored CR 39, RC 39, SC 38. Is it possible to score mid-40s in one category, but 30s in the others? Or will each score always be similar due to adaptive test?

If you mean SC, CR, and RC, then no, the GMAT does not "cap" your score by type (and there are a lot of ESRs that show underperformance in 1 question type out of 3). But it's important to note that the GMAT does not use the individual scores in its own scoring (they are just reported in ESRs). Each question provides information to the algorithm. That means that if you get (say) an SC question correct, then the next question is likely to be tougher, irrespective of question type. Even if the overall score comes down because of one question type, verbal has a lot of "headroom", so great scores should still be possible.

Do you get separate scores in the sections(CR, RC, SC)? I thought that on the official test's ESR you only get the separate percentiles.
