Hello Critical Square.
Thanks for your thoughtful evaluations on this thread!
I will follow a template that you praised from a fellow forum colleague:
I'm considering applying for the January deadlines in the top schools in Europe mainly: LBS, INSEAD, HEC Paris, Said, Judge, and IMD. But maybe I'll apply to the top 3 in the US: Stanford, HBS, and Wharton (still thinking about it. Do you think I have a shot?).
Gender: Male
Country of Origin: Portuguese / Brazilian (born and raised mainly in Brazil)
Age: 28 at enrollment
GMAT: 730 (V42/Q48) - Not stellar but overall good; 6.0 AW; 8 IR
GPA: 7/10 in Aeronautical Engineering at The Top Brazilian University (This will probably be misinterpreted by universities, but its almost impossible to get a 8 at my university. 7 is considered a high grade, but this will warrant some explanations)
Work Experience (All in Brazil): 5 years total / 6 at enrollment
1 year internship in a management consulting firm that eventually was bought by EY (Big Four)
2 years in M&A for a medium international Investment bank, from which: 6 months as trainee, got promoted to Analyst. After 10 more months got promoted to Senior Analyst. After 8 more months I was offered a position (from a former superior who had left the bank) as Senior Analyst with possibility of being rapidly promoted to Associate at a Small Boutique and took the offer, leaving the bank. (I'm able to substantiate this decision).
1 year in M&A at the regional investment boutique, from which: 3 months as trial period (senior analyst) and then got the promotion to Associate and started to manage a small team of 3 people. I stayed for 9 more months, managing a lot of sell-side projects in a wide range of industries.
At the end of this period, I started negotiating compensation and was eventually offered a minor partner role, but declined due to not agreeing with some financial aspects of the offer. I proceeded to leave the boutique and founded my own M&A consultancy firm, and have been doing that since (1 more year). I already had clients 2 months after starting.
Recommendations: Should be fairly good. I will make a request to one of my clients (since I have no boss now) and a partner who referenced me to some projects.
Extracurriculars: I am a certified financial advisor (Not CFA, but a national-wide certification in Brazil), a certified airplane pilot (hobby), a diver (leisure) and also have set up a program through which vegetables are sourced free of charge from farms to Elderly Care Centers in the Brazilian countryside.
Post MBA goal: I intend to join an international company which has to deal with international sourcing (import/export) throughout its supply chain (Probably a consumer goods or electronics company). My objective is to stay 2-3 years in a management position to get enough experience and then move out and take charge of expanding my family business to Europe or USA (hence the consideration for some american schools). With the latter being the main career goal overall.
1- What do you thing are my chances at my target schools? Should I go for the american schools?
2- Do you think my Quant score on the GMAT is a red flag? If yes, should I retake it? I could probably raise it a little with some more effort and dedication.
