Hello everyone, thanks in advance.
My partner applied to 7 bschools:
1. HBS, dinged without interview
2. Columbia, dinged without interview
3. Wharton, waitlist
4. MIT, waitlist
5. Yale, waitlist
6. Cornell Johnson, waitlist
7. Kelley Indiana U, waitlist
We have really no clue now. Here comes the background:
1. Age: 35, WE: 13 years----possibly the app killer?
2. Background: Chinese government, diplomat for cultural affairs. basically something like public relations or marketing
3. Test score: GMAT 790, IR=3, AWA=5; TOEFL 108, 30, 30, 23, 25
4. Career Goal: join a museum to lead its develpment office----possibly the app killer no.2?
so at this point, if he continues to apply this year:
1. any schools are more age-friendly?
2. how to design his career goal to help a bschool understand his transferable merits? is General Management/Consulting/Marketing/Branding possible? And is it a must to avoid those big finance schools like Wharton/Columbia/NYU?

that SUUUUCKS!!! He did a great job of applying to a broad range of schools to increase the odds of getting in. This is inbelieveable!!
I think you are right on point with the deal breakers. Admitted students are trending downward in age, so 35 is really in the Executive MBA territory.
AGE: Given his qualifications, I would definitely apply to Stanford MSx, a 1-year in-residence program, and MIT Sloan Fellows. A lot of career-maximizers do 1-year MBAs at this age so i would recommend he check out the Cornell 1-year MBA, possibly the 1-year Tech MBA if applicable, along with Kellogg, UCS Marshall & Emory 1-year MBAs.
European schools are far more receptive to older students, so I would recommend checking out IMD, which is geared toward mid-career professionals.
Also, INSEAD, HEC, Oxford, IE, IESE etc might be worth a shot. HKUST if open to Hong Kong.
On dealbreaker #2 - yes, possibly a dealbreaker. They are obsessed with rankings and career placement stats go into those; he might look hard to place with such a narrow goal. Specific is good, but he needs to provide a clear plan and path on how he will get there (connections?)

He is applying to an MBA program because he want to relocate to the US to live together with me. So we kinda are focused on the schools that have a strong connection to the NYC market. (Marrying me would be a simpler way but you know, Chinese family is really traditional so he at least won't consider this option in a near future.)
He worked and is still working with the leading US museums and one powerful curator wrote a recommendation letter for him. But seems like BSchools don't have many resources in the area. The Kelley AO told him very frankly he gotta look for a job basically by himself.
He tried to explain during the interview but from the result I guess his explanation went null.
