Hi there,

Best of luck on your GMAT prep - looks as though you're on the right track. Given your age, I think it's important to think about your post MBA goals to ensure you're going after the right schools and the right program. A FT MBA will offer you different opportunities than a PT MBA and HBS will offer you different value than will Sloan depending on what you want to do and where you want to do it.

Note that with your level of experience, AdComms will expect a different level of leadership, influence, and impact, so ensure that your application is geared for that. Looking forward to hearing back about your future plans!

Thanks for sharing.

You have a strong background to build your application essays around. You would do well to highlight leadership and interpersonal skills. For example, share some details why you were chosen to win the award for collaborating well with colleagues across unit. Adding international dimension through work or personal experiences would also help. These should support your strong academic potential.

Being clear on your goals post-MBA and defining how an MBA at a target school would help you should be an area of focus for your application. Showing fit would be essential to convince the admissions committee to admit you from the pool of similarly outstanding candidates.

All the best!

Target Schools--HBS, GSB, Wharton, Sloan, Haas Part-Time (this is located near my current employer, and ER *might* cover expenses)

Background
  • Work Experience: 5 years with a health/retirement benefits consulting firm as an Actuarial Analyst > Senior Actuarial Analyst.
Associate with the Society of Actuaries.
Recipient of the One Company Award, "for serving as a visible role model for collaboration that ignores the artificial boundaries of business units, markets or practices."
Involved in several out-of-scope projects, led teams to streamline processes
  • Extra curriculars: Eagle Scout; volunteered with Scouting for about 4 years after adulthood. Worked as an EMT through university. Sporadic stuff since; nothing long-term. Improv/theatre group.
  • Undergrad school/major: University of California 2nd Tier school, Mathematics and Economics, Summa cum laude with highest honors in math
  • Race/ethnicity: white
  • Sex: Male

Stats
  • GMAT: TBD (Gmatprep / Veritas Prep practice scores, in order: 710, 760, 750, 770, 800)
  • GPA - Pre transfer 3.9, Post transfer (upper division) 4.0

Thank you for your detailed post. You have a great profile and if you carefully connect your experience to your goals you should do well. I have worked with actuaries and while they aren't the most common group of applicants, they actually do well. Of course whether you can get into Harvard or Stanford depends on your GMAT score but you seem to be trending well.

Good luck and email me if you want to talk about how we can work together. [email protected]

Best,
Scott
