Requesting a quick profile review, thanks for the help! Aiming to apply in R1 this year later.
Background: I am 28M, (ORM - Indian Citizen, Engineer, Working in the Middle East)
Academics:
GRE: 330 (Q168, V163, 4.5 AWA)
GPA: 3.7, T50 School in India, Electrical Engineering, Lots of ECs
Work Ex:
6 Years (6.5 at the time of application) in large scale tech startups (IPO). 1 year sales & ops + 5 years in tech strategy & general management leading a $2M USD business with a team of 10+ in Dubai.
Leadership:
i) Currently Co-founder at a social impact venture where we help connect minority communities to legal employment opportunities in the MENA region, reducing human trafficking and blue collar labour exploitation
ii) 2 Promotions, Leading a team of 10 direct reportees (MBAs, 2-4 years work exp)
Post MBA Goal: Stay in Tech Strategy/General Management move to West Coast US.
Target Schools:
Hail Mary: Stanford, HBS
Reach: Haas, Ross, UCLA, Cornell
Safe: McCombs, USC, Foster
- Are my target schools realistic?
- Would my age/work ex be a deterrent? I will be 29 at the time of starting and average class size is ~27-28.
- Being a ORM, would the 330 GRE be competitive?

Thank you for sharing your profile. Your profile looks great. To begin with, your undergrad GPA is good, and 330 is a competitive GRE score. So, this part is pretty sorted. Your 6 years of work experience at a startup will help you bring interesting success stories to the table. You will need to recall instances and scenarios from your professional experience in which you stood up to take on leadership roles and helped your company sail through a crisis or oncoming problems. You may also highlight your career progression and performance that has been superior to your peers. Your leadership experiences are great; make the most of them. Your ECs are missing? I assume your ECs are strong, and speaking about them with the right passion would significantly enhance your apps.
Your post-MBA goals are clear, but divide them into short and long-term goals aligned with your previous work experiences and accomplishments. You may want to read an article on how to frame practical post-MBA goals essays,you will get some insights to communicate the convincing case to the adcoms.
To address your worries, your age will not affect your prospects. Simply focus on building excellent apps and delivering a clear vision to the AdComs as to why MBA? Regarding your schools, they are realistic. West Coast is for individuals who are more interested in tech-related careers. Harvard can be a stretch for anyone. Also, the list of the schools gets improvised after you are ready with your ' Branding for MBA'- Branding is how you portray your profile to business schools. It plays a key role in identifying which schools you have the maximum potential of converting. It is the pre-work that we do with all our applicants. Overall you have a good profile. You have an excellent profile. Your academic score, GRE, and work experience everything are all lined up and really great. I would suggest you work hard on your B-School applications. Highlight your work and academic achievement and certifications you have. Having international exposure will certainly be an advantage. And the entrepreneurship experience adds more weightage to your profile.
However, the above-shortlisted schools seem to be good (clearly shows the quality of research on these schools). Similarly, you could legitimately decide to open the essay with the reason why a particular MBA program is best for you to highlight enthusiasm for that school. Whichever structure you choose, each section of your essay must be tightly integrated with others. Your past, present, and future must be shown to logically support each other.
However, the above-shortlisted schools seem to be good (clearly shows the quality of research on these schools). Similarly, you could legitimately decide to open the essay with the reason why a particular MBA program is best for you to highlight enthusiasm for that school.
