IMO, this question is not just about comparisons but also subtle ||ism. I also had B as a contender until I read D. We need to have 'achievements' in parallel with 'contributions' because we have an indicator out there 'In addition to'.

I hope this helps.

In addition to mathematical achievements in areas such as vibrating strings, Daniel Bernoulli contributed to the field of statistics with his theories of risk and carefully analyzing smallpox morbidity and mortality data to assess the benefits of a vaccine.

(A) Bernoulli contributed to the field of statistics with his theories of risk and carefully analyzing
(B) Bernoulli contributed to the field of statistics by his theories of risk and by carefully analyzing
Awkward comparison, becoz it means that bernoulli contributed to field of statistics in addition to mathematical achievments. The comparisons should be between his achievments and his contributions.Bernoulli can contribute to mathematics but not to mathematical achievements .
(C) Bernoulli was a contributor to the field of statistics with his theories of risk and with his careful analysis of
(D) Bernoulli's contributions to the field of statistics include his theories of risk and his careful analysis of
(E) Bernoulli's contributions to the field of statistics including theorizing risk and careful analysis of

This appears to be a GMAT Hacks question of the day. It reappeared on January 3, 2013. The Official Explanation is as follows:

Answer: D The sentence sets up a comparison with the words "in addition to." The first clause refers to "mathematical achievements," so the subject following the comma should be comparable to achievements. The sentence as written (as well as (B) and (C)) places a person after the comma, which is wrong.

Achievements can be compared, but an achievement and a person cannot. That leaves us with (D) and (E). The subject following the comma ("Daniel Bernoulli's contributions") is the main subject of the sentence, it needs to have a corresponding verb. In (D), this is "include." There is no verb in (E), so (E) is not a complete sentence. (D) is correct.

I have a doubt; is "In addition to mathematical achievements in areas such as vibrating strings" modifying bernoulli or bernoulli's contribution?

Good question but on E, who does HIS refer to? Bernoulli's is a possessive so can't be him

Thanks for the question avohden

Keep them coming

Cheers!

jlgdr - I see your point on "His". Guess that is the problem with non-OG problems. The answer is the "best" but is not correct grammar.

'His' is a possessive pronoun and can refer to the possessive noun - Bernoulli's. This is an accepted grammatical usage. But yes, may not be tested on GMAT (never seen such a question on OG)

Got the correct answer on the first go. Try your hand on this one and if got it correct Then give me KUDOS

+1D,

The key point is to note that Contribution is the subject, so A,B,C are out. Between D and E , D is better

Very easy question...

A,B and C can be eliminated because they use Bernoulli but the question is comparing his achievements/contributions.

Out of D and E, E changes the meaning of the sentence.

So, the correct answer is D.
