Brussels sprouts is Plural.
Therefore A and B are out since pronoun "its" can't be used.
We are left with C, D and E
In C subject verb agreement is wrong : their...exceeds (It should be their...exceed)
Left with D and E
Option D refers to a specific walnut by using possesive
Therefore D is out.

E is the correct answer

This question is part of the GMAT Club Sentence Correction : Pronoun Revision Project.

Named for the capital of Belgium, Brussels sprouts, which at its fullest growth scarcely exceeds a large walnut in size, are immature buds shaped like tiny cabbages.

A. which at its fullest growth scarcely exceeds a large walnut in size

'its' is wrong here as 'sprouts' is plural. SV number error with exceeds, should be 'exceed' to go with plural 'sprouts'.

B. which at its fullest growth scarcely exceed a large walnut in size

'its' is wrong here as 'sprouts' is plural.

C. which at their fullest growth scarcely exceeds a large walnut in size

'its' is wrong here as 'sprouts' is plural. SV number error with exceeds, should be 'exceed' to go with plural 'sprouts'.

D. which at their fullest growth scarcely exceed a walnut's large size

[color=#ff0000]'its' is wrong here as 'sprouts' is plural. Meaning error with "a walnut's large size". This expression assumes that all walnuts are large in size whereas the actual sentence refers to a particular type of walnut (the one with a large size, relatively speaking!).

E. which at their fullest growth scarcely exceed a large walnut in size

E is Correct. This choice removes the SV # error in the original sentence while also preserving the correct meaning of the sentence.

E. which at their fullest growth scarcely exceed a large walnut in size

Brussels sprouts are plural, and should be referd with 'their' rather than 'its'.

Named for the capital of Belgium, Brussels sprouts, which at its fullest growth scarcely exceeds a large walnut in size, are immature buds shaped like tiny cabbages.

A. which at its fullest growth scarcely exceeds a large walnut in size- Brussels sprouts is plural hence its is incorrect and verb exceeds is singular.

B. which at its fullest growth scarcely exceed a large walnut in size- "its" is singular

C. which at their fullest growth scarcely exceeds a large walnut in size- "exceeds" is singular

D. which at their fullest growth scarcely exceed a walnut's large size- possessive noun distorts the meaning

E. which at their fullest growth scarcely exceed a large walnut in size-Correct

shades28 Option D literally says that Brussel Spouts somehow exceed a walnut's large size. It doesn't make sense to say that the crop exceeded the large size of something.
