OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

After seeing the police driving on her street, Jane was convinced that the elderly neighbor was involved with some shady people who is 85 years old.

A. neighbor was involved with some shady people who is 85 years old

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect. The plural subject people does not agree with the singular verb is.

Also, it can be understood from the context of the sentence that the relative clause who is 85 years old modifies the elderly neighbor rather than some shady people.

What helps us identify this question as a Relative Clause question as well as identify this mistake is the following Stop Sign:

    who, which, that, whose, whom

B. neighbor, who is 85 years old, were involved with some shady people

While this answer choice corrects the original Relative Clause mistake, it is grammatically incorrect. The singular subject neighbor does not agree with the plural verb were.

C. neighbor was involved with some shady organization that is 85 years old

Although it is grammatically correct, this answer choice changes the meaning of the original sentence. Some shady people and some shady organization are not the same.

Also, it can be understood from the context of the sentence that the relative clause who is 85 years old modifies the elderly neighbor rather than some shady organization.

What helps us identify this question as a Relative Clause question as well as identify this mistake is the following Stop Sign:

    who, which, that, whose, whom

D. neighbor, who is 85 years old, was involved with some shady people

The relative clause who is 85 years old modifies the noun neighbor and therefore should appear immediately after neighbor.

E. neighbor, who are 85 years old, was involved with some shady people

While this answer choice corrects the original Relative Clause mistake, it is grammatically incorrect. The singular subject neighbor does not agree with the plural verb are.
Hello Bunuel, Thanks for the explanation, but i was wondering whether use of present tesnse "who is 85 year old" is correct here.
