Believing this new pest to be a variety of sweet-potato whitefly, the entomologists confined their search to parasites of the sweet-potato whitefly. As per my understanding of the argument, for the last 3 years,
entomologists searched for a parasite to help control "a sweet-potato whitefly"
Since genetic research confirms the species to be a silverleaf whitefly(not a sweet-potato whitefly)
and the conlusion is that the search for a parasite has so far been a wasted effort,
the assumption could be that
neither of the parasites of the sweet-potato whitefly is also a parasite of the silverleaf whitefly also.
Since negating this statement can break the conclusion(Option D)
entomologists searched for a parasite to help control "a sweet-potato whitefly"
Since genetic research confirms the species to be a silverleaf whitefly(not a sweet-potato whitefly)
and the conlusion is that the search for a parasite has so far been a wasted effort,
the assumption could be that

IMO : Option D
entomologists researching on variety of sweet-potato whitefly BUT they have found a different species silverleaf whitefly.
Assumption : sweet-potato whitefly NOT EQ TO silverleaf whitefly .
