I went with D and I'm still having a hard time understanding why C is the better option. Anyone care to break it down? :)

I think the issue with D is that, it only states an alternate criterion but does not present any facts to support it

Question Analysis
  • C: Franchot is considered a great writer. Why? He predicted issues arising from the Industrial Revolution (IR).
  • A: Not a great writer. Why? A great writer moves people through written words and addresses social issues. The consequences of the IR were already understood at the time.

Answer Choices Analysis
(A) Accepts Concetta’s criterion and then adds evidence to Concetta’s case
  • Completely Wrong choice
(B) Discredits Concetta’s evidence and then generalizes from new evidence
  • Irrelevant
(C) Rejects Concetta’s criterion and then disputes a specific claim
    • Rejects: Yes, it rejects Concetta’s claim with supporting facts.
    • Disputes: Addresses the awareness of the consequences of the Industrial Revolution.
    • Keep it !!

(D) Disputes Concetta’s conclusion and then presents facts in support of an alternative criterion
  • Disputes: Yes.
  • Presents facts: An alternative criterion is mentioned but lacks supporting evidence.
    Reject

(E) Attacks one of Concetta’s claims and then criticizes the structure of her argument
  • Irrelevant
    • This does not match the logical flow of the argument.
      Final Answer: (C)
