I am going with option c.
the first boldface supports the conclusion while the second boldface is a factual premise aligning with option c.
option A incorrect as it says 1BF supports professor, but it supports the opponents.
option b and d incorrect for the same reason as of option a
option e incorrect as it says 2BF strengthens the conclusion while it actually weakens the opponents conclusion.

How I saw this:

Professor says the following:
Wittgenstein (W) formulated certain concepts. Russell (R) formulated analogous concepts.
Historians used to believe that they both did it independently. (traditional belief)
However, recent discoveries show R's notes on W's book on LANGUAGE (to note).
Since these notes predate R's own formulations, R must not have developed them independently. Hence, now everyone believes that the traditional belief was false. (traditional belief was false seems to be an intermediate conclusion and BF1 is evidence in support of that. That much is clear).
Professor further states: "However" (to note), there has to be further careful examination of the fact that Rusell's notes are restricted to the early parts of the book (remember it was a big book on language) before W actually gets into the metaphysics of language. (BF2)

The trick part is to try and understand what position does the professor have. It seems to me that since is not accepting the intermediate conclusion and asks us to further examine, he does not agree with it. Hence, the intermediate conclusion that the traditional belief was false is something that he is opposing. He is criticizing it and is highlighting further evidence in BF 2.

The only option consistent with this thought process is C and hence I chose Answer to be C

IMO D.

The first has been used as an evidence to support the author's position on an intermediate conclusion. The second position is used as an evidence to generate caution against that intermediate conclusion that the proposed theory is clearly false.

Only option D explains the same.

The 1st bf is against the author's mainpoint. Note how its placed before hoever. 2nd bf is after the professor's however statemetn and suctatiates it.

so only answer matching this is C (a,b and d) all say bf1 is in support of conclusion so straight away reject. option E says bf2 supports "that" evidence" now this means the evidence quoted in that sentence but BF2 is against tht evidence so reject e

A and B are definitely wrong. the first does not provide evidence to the conclusion defended by author. Author is not defending the conclusion that Russel copied Witt.

D says the second part attacks the intermediate conclusion drawn by first part. Thts not correct.

E says the second part supports the first, in reality does opposite. Wrong.

C is the answer.

Lets look at the flow of reasoning:
Traditional view is that both Russell and Wittgenstein(witt) developed their concepts independently.
But the author later uses evidence disputing this conclusion(the letter that was found)
The professors position is to criticise the false conclusion.
Note the first point in bold, the language used is "since" this indicates evidence that the professor is bringing in.
The second is his own evidence. This along takes out A,B, D and E

Let's simplify and break down the question stem. It takes some time and effort but pays off greatly and saves time when examining the options.

Wittgenstein (W) and Russell (R) worked on the same topic.
W formulated the concept, R developed it.
People believed that both of them did it independently. (Let's call this is Position ONE)

Historians found that 'R' had made notes from one of the books by 'W'.
The book by 'W' that 'R' read had mention of the topic both worked on.
The notes that 'R' had made were dated before he conceived 'W'
Since, 'R' had access to the book before he published anything on the topic, people believe that position ONE must be false. (Let's call this Position TWO)

[Note the word (HOWEVER). Watch out for something that might refute position TWO that we just established.]

Professor says that the discovery (that supported Position TWO) must be examined carefully.
He says that notes by 'R' cover parts of the book that come BEFORE 'W' speaks of the shared topic.
----
Now, we have all the facts from the question.
Note that the Professor does not EXPLICITLY state his position, but based on how he ends, we can gather that he is refuting Position TWO, and hence, supporting Position ONE.
With this, let's look at the options.
---
A) The first boldface in fact works AGAINST Position ONE, that the professor is defending. Invalid option.

B) The first boldface works AGAINST the position professor is defending (Position ONE). Invalid option.

C) The first is evidence used in support of Position ONE. And the professor is indeed criticizing it. So far this option holds up.
The second boldface is indeed quoted by professor to support his own position, as we concluded above. Strong option. We hold onto this.

D) The first boldface does provide evidence to support a conclusion. However, this conclusion is NOT drawn to support the conclusion drawn by the professor. In fact, the professor refutes this conclusion. Invalid option.

E) The first boldface is indeed evidence in support of a position criticized or refuted by the professor. So far this holds up.
The second boldface, however, does NOT corroborate the evidence. In fact, it contradicts it. Invalid option.

(C) is the only option that holds up.

the notes precede Russell’s own conception of the metaphysics of language.
However, this discovery warrants a more circumspect conclusion.
Russell’s notes are restricted to early parts of Wittgenstein’s text, parts that come before the ones in which Wittgenstein launches into his investigation of the metaphysics of language.

(A) The first provides evidence supporting the overall position defended by the professor; the second is evidence that has been used in support of an opposing position.
The first boldface supports a conclusion criticized by the professor. NO
(B) The first provides evidence supporting the overall position defended by the professor; the second is that position.
Second boldface supports professors position. NO
(C) The first is evidence used in support of a conclusion criticized by the professor; the second is evidence offered to support the professor’s own position.
YES, the first boldface is supporting a conclusion the professor criticizes and second boldface supports his own position. ANSWER

(D) The first provides evidence supporting an intermediate conclusion drawn to support the overall position defended by the professor; the second provides evidence against that intermediate conclusion. NO
(E) The first is evidence used in support of a conclusion criticized by the professor; the second is further information that corroborates that evidence. NO

Option C

The lines that follow the first boldface are - "the traditional opinion is obviously false" which is an intermediate conclusion which the author says "HOWEVER, this discovery..." which is him replying/criticizing the first bf.

The last sentence is evidence supporting his claim that the first boldface is not fully true.
Bunuel
Professor: Wittgenstein formulated concepts pertaining to the metaphysics of language, and Russell developed closely analogous concepts on the same subject. The traditional opinion among scholars holds that these two philosophers developed their concepts independently of each other. Historians have, however, uncovered Russell’s notes that examine one of Wittgenstein’s books on language. Many now argue that since this book includes a presentation of Wittgenstein’s metaphysics of language, and since the notes precede Russell’s own conception of the metaphysics of language, the traditional opinion is obviously false. However, this discovery warrants a more circumspect conclusion. Russell’s notes are restricted to early parts of Wittgenstein’s text, parts that come before the ones in which Wittgenstein launches into his investigation of the metaphysics of language.

In the professor’s reasoning, the two portions in boldface play which of the following roles?

(A) The first provides evidence supporting the overall position defended by the professor; the second is evidence that has been used in support of an opposing position.

(B) The first provides evidence supporting the overall position defended by the professor; the second is that position.

(C) The first is evidence used in support of a conclusion criticized by the professor; the second is evidence offered to support the professor’s own position.

(D) The first provides evidence supporting an intermediate conclusion drawn to support the overall position defended by the professor; the second provides evidence against that intermediate conclusion.

(E) The first is evidence used in support of a conclusion criticized by the professor; the second is further information that corroborates that evidence.

A-incorrect because it completely reverses the roles
B-incorrect because it sort of misidentifies both parts in that it says the first boldface supports the professor which is not true
D-incorrect it claims the first boldface supports an intermediate conclusion for the professor.
E-incorrect the second boldface serves to weaken and limit the impact of the first boldface by showing that the note did not even cover the relevant part showing it was not supportive
C-correct because the first boldface indicates evidence from the opposing group "many now argue that since" and the second shows why the opponent's argument is flowed "However"

Professor wants to support the traditional opinion, as he provides a evidence in support which is the second bold face

first bold face is opposing the Traditional opinion, so Prof won't support or defend the first bold face

so we can eliminate all rest, and consider only C and E

now, the second BF is not corroborating (supporting) with the first evidence, it is in support with the Traditional Opinion
so C explains that perfectly

The notes precede Russells own conception of the metaphysics of language

This is the evidence that is used by others to say that the idea that they came up with their ideas independently is false.

Russells notes are resticted to early parts of Wittgensteins text, parts that come before the ones in which wittgenstein launches into his investigation of the metaphysics of language

The above provides support to the professors option.

Professor's position: The discovery only warrants a cautious conclusion, we shouldn't dismiss traditional view

ST1: This is evidence used by other historians to conclude that traditional view is false, which is criticised by the professor by saying its too hasty
ST2: This is new factual evidence that professor brings into light to support their own position that we need to be cautious

imo it's C.
Overall,
the professor tell the belief, gives evidence for that and then give evidence to criticize the belief.
