Which of the following sets has the smallest standard deviation?

A. {2, 5, 13, 17, 23}
B. {3, 4, 7, 18, 18}
C. {1, 4, 12, 16, 17}
D. {-50, 2, 33, 34, 35}
E. {0, 0, 0, 19, 31}

Ans C

A,D &E are out since their ranges are high

B out ,as it has 2 extreme points from mean(ie 10)

Ans C
Does it mean that in two different sets of same number of data but different values, the set with higher range has higher standard deviation?

find out the mean for each set and compare it to the unit difference from the greatest point in the set.

1. 12 (23-12= 11 units)
2. 10 (18-10=8 units)
3. 10 (17-10=7 units) Smallest
4. 10.8 (35-10.8=24.2 units)
5. 10 (31-10=21 units)
