Jerry and Silvia wanted to go from the southwest corner of a square field to the northeast corner. Jerry walked due east and then due north to reach the goal, but Silvia headed northeast and reached the goal walking in a straight line. Which of the following is closest to how much shorter Silvia’s trip was, compared to Jerry’s trip?

(A) 30%

(B) 40%

(C) 50%

(D) 60%

(E) 70%

Let’s let the side of the square = 10. Jerry walked on two sides of the field, and Silvia walked on the diagonal of the field. Thus, Jerry’s trip was 20 and Silvia’s was 10√2, which is about 10 x 1.4 = 14.

So Silvia’s trip is approximately 6 units shorter than Jerry’s, or approximately 6/20 = 3/10 = 30% shorter.

Answer: A

Jerry walked = 4
Silva walked= 2√2
so difference = 4-2√2 = 2*(2-1.4 ) = 1.2
