While Leslie was flying his airplane from Hartfield to Weatherford, did he ever fly faster than 200 miles per hour?

(1) The distance from Hartfield to Weatherford is 470 miles
(2) The flight from Hartfield to Weatherford took Leslie exactly 2 hours

Kudos for a correct solution.

speed > 200 mph?

Statement 1: d=470
nothing is given about time
Insufficient

Statement 2:
t=2
nothing about distance
Insufficient

Combined,
d=470 and t is exactly 2. speed here is 235 mph.
Sufficient

ans is C ..if we combine bothe the statements we get to know that the avz speed of the flight is 235 miles per hour so it has to move past 200 miles per hour speed at some point in the flight. Ans C.

Answer is C ... neither data 1 nor data 2 is sufficient but combing 2 data is sufficient . The important thing should be notice here in contrast to the point some guys says , there is no need to divide 470 by 2 and get result 235 to conclude that the average speed is 235 so is greater than 200!!! . Instead, the point here is if we consider the maximum 200 miles per hour constantly , the distance would cover by plane is 400 which is less than 470!! , so in some instances , the plane had to be faster than 200 in order to cover 470 miles in 2 hour . this point is the answer to the question , Not the average speed is 235!!!

Best Regards,

VERITAS PREP OFFICIAL SOLUTION

Correct Answer: C

To solve this problem, we need to use the distance formula: Distance = Rate x Time. To solve for the rate, we need both the distance and the travel time of the plane trip. Statement (1) only provides us with the distance; not sufficient. Statement (2) only provides us with the time, so on its own it is also not sufficient. Combining both statements, we know that the average speed was (470 miles)/(2 hours) = 235 miles per hour. Since the average speed of the trip is over 200 miles per hour, Leslie must have flown over 200 miles per hour for at least a portion of the trip. Both statements together are sufficient.

Hi Bunuel ,

question as speed > 200 m/hr ?
1) Not sufficient

D/T >200
given D = 470 .
Sign of T unknown so can't multiple --- not sufficient

2)
given T =2hrs
therefore
D/2 > 200 hence D > 400
therefore min value of D 401
so s= 401/2 =200.5

Hence S> 200

B can be the answer .

Is any wrong with my approach .Please help .

Bunuel: In this question if we would have been asked whether he ever flew at the speed less than 200 miles/hour, In that case, answer would have been E?

Please confirm.
