1 - Accept the new score (and school will see both the new and the old score).

Your new score does improve slightly in Quant and IR. Any schools will, at least, note your score consistency.

If you want to take another gmat, it is also fine. Make sure the next is up.

Btw did you do online gmat for the latest gmat (q49 v38 ir8)?

I'm assuming you initially chose to cancel the score when you received it. That being the case, if you belong to an over-represented group, keep the score canceled, study for a few more weeks and retake it. Stanford and HBS R1 deadlines are still about a month away, so you might be able to accommodate the retake in your schedule while you prepare your applications. If you need a little more time, you could also consider applying with the original 710 and mentioning in your optional essay that you are planning to retake the test soon. If you don't belong to an over-represented group, reinstate the new score and apply confidently to all your intended schools. I wish you the best!

To have the best shot at scholarships, it's always recommended to score 10+ points higher than the school's average GMAT score.

Hi GMAT Club,

This is my first post and to start I wanted to thank you for the incredible amount of resources present in this website to help us prepare for GMAT.

I had my first attempt on the GMAT a few months ago and score 710 (Q48, V38, IR7 and AWA 4). I wasn't very happy with the score since in the practice GMAT official prep exams I was consistently scoring 750, with V 42-44, so I decided to take it again today.

Disappointingly I obtained the same overall result, 710, but with small improvements in some of the sections: Q49, V38, IR8 and I also think that the AWA went better than the last time so hopefully I can raise to a 5.

Now I don't really know whether to accept this new score or not. Would it look bad in the eyes of the commission since it doesn't show an overall improvement? Or is it worth keeping it considering that some of the subsections are better?

Basically the options I have available are:
1 - Accept the new score (and school will see both the new and the old score)
2 - Cancel the new score and keep the old one
3 - Cancel the new score and do the GMAT again, but this will mean that I will need to move my first round applications to the second round

My plan is to apply to HBS and Stanford GSB in the first round and to Sload, Haas and Anderson in the second round. I believe the rest of my application is strong and my converted GPA is close to 4.

What do you think is the best option?

Thank you!
With that improvement even if it is little, i don't know why you would want to cancel it. Keep it as it's not going to bite you. Rather it shows positives - consistency and grit.

In the meantime if you decide to take GMAT again, do so.

Thank you for all the answers, super useful! I will follow the suggestion and keep the new score. I'll see if I can try to squeeze a third (and final!) attempt at GMAT before September, but my plan was to fully focus on the essays in August.

freedom128 - no, I took it at the test center. I'm still waiting for the AWA score

icanhazmba - I actually accepted the score at the end of the test, but I still have 24hrs in case I decide to cancel it. I studied engineering and I now work in consulting so in that sense I'm probably in the over-represented group. However, I have quite a different background as I am from Italy and I have studied and worked in 5 different countries so hopefully that will work in my favor.

I don't suppose there are many Italian candidates with international work experience who apply to business schools. This will easily keep you off the over-represented pile, but schools do try to keep a soft cap on the total percent of people from a certain educational background, and so you might have a bit of a tougher fight there. In any case, I am sure you have tons of unique experiences and stories to tell from working around the globe, and that should keep the committees interested in your candidacy. It also helps that you have a near-perfect GPA with a quantitative background. Trust me, ad comms respect that a lot because engineering is not an easy major. Cheers!

Honestly, I think the first thing you need to figure out is whether you plan to retake the GMAT. Would you consider pushing to the second round if you were able to get a higher GMAT score?
