Yeah, I would wait to do your renewal in the US!
I did mine through the embassy at Chicago, and it took about a week. Now I just carry old passport with F1 visa stamp + new passport with me when I travel

I know many people who have their visa stamp on their old passport and they carry their current one and old one
It's a little annoying, but since you have 15 months, you should be fine
