Official Explanation:

We’ll go for ALTERNATIVE because it is not obvious how to correct the sentence.
This sentence has a double meaning. By using the word garnering instead of garnered, it
seems that the woman is the one who received less acclaim and not the second novel,
which is illogical. Answer (C) also creates this double meaning and inaccurate comparison
by using the word and before garnered. Hence (A) and (C) are eliminated. Answers (D) and
(E) use the word as, which changes the meaning of the sentence and suggests that the
first novel also received less acclaim, which would then mean the sentence has an
incomplete comparison. Therefore, answers (D) and (E) are incorrect. Answer (B) is the
only answer option that correctly compares White’s first novel to his second, and states
that the second novel did not receive as much acclaim as the first.
