Following are the key highlights of your profile -
1. You have strong work experience in operations and project management in a large PSU such as BPCL. This definitely adds value to your profile.
2. You have a very good academic track record which can help you put forward a strong candidature even with an average GMAT score like 700. However, you should aim for a 730+ score especially if you are eyeing for the top B schools in the US or Europe.
3. You have average extracurriculars and you may want to compensate it with some CSR/social activities you have been involved in while working at the grassroots level(e.g land acquisition ) in BPCL. Such experiences are greatly valued by the adcom in some B schools (e.g.Oxford) both from admission as well as scholarship perspective.
Coming to the choice of B schools, ISB, being an Indian B school would be your best bet as far as leveraging the BPCL brand is concerned. You have a strong profile for NUS /NTU although your work experience is slightly on the lower side when compared to the average work ex at these schools. The average work ex in top US & European B schools is also around 55-60 months. Hi, I have worked in ONGC for almost 9 years. I have worked for 6 years in shift operations in production and for the past 2 years I am working as a functional team member/system administrator for ERP project ( PRA MODULE) for ONGC. From starting I have knack for finance and now I want to switch my field to finance. My concern is that I have engineering experience along with work experience in Production and IT at present. Can you please tell me what GMAT score do I need to get into top B Schools in India and will I be able to switch my function by applying for 1 year course Executive MBA or should I go for 2 years proper MBA from University outside MBA ?

Hi Rohit,
The average GMAT score for getting admission in the top IIMs/ISB hovers around 710. The GMAT score requirement may change depending upon the candidate's academic track record. For example, a candidate with poor academics in undergrad may need to have a higher GMAT score to make the cut. The final selection depends a lot on other crucial factors such as your application essays, statement of purpose, extracurriculars, and interview performance.
Coming to the question of switching functions, it is pretty much possible to change your role/function/industry after pursuing one year MBA from the top B schools in India. However, switching to finance roles may be difficult. Most of the companies that would be coming to your campus would consider your experience before shortlisting you for a particular role. Given your experience, you may not like an entry-level finance role. Being said that there are examples where people with PSU work ex have switched to project finance, banking roles after pursuing one year MBA from ISB/IIMs. You can also consider consulting, operations, project management as alternate post-MBA career choices. Finally, whether you want to pursue your MBA from India or abroad will depend on many factors such as Post-MBA career goals, ROI, personal aspirations, etc.
