Re: What Are My Chances - Profile Evaluation Tool! WAMC [#permalink]
Hi Everyone,

I recently applied to 5 Universities in EU - HEC, IESE, LBS, Judge and Said and was rejected without interview for all 5.

I have been working in the recruitment/Ops team of a leading Asset Management Firm since the last 4 years and have a total work exp. of 5 years. Prior to that I did my engineering in India.
My GRE is a 329. 170/170 on Quant.

Can someone take a look my applications and tell me what probably went wrong?

Thank you in advance!

Hi. Everything looks great on your profile.
I would check the tool and see what are the average and above average chances.
It is interesting you picked Marshall - I would rather suggest UNC and Tepper on the lower spectrum. You can add Fuqua and esp Darden to target/safety. Darden is in a few ways a peer school to Ross/Haas/Stern/Fuqua and MBB's recruit on campus at Darden just like at UNC and you have a great chance of scoring a scholarship at both of those places. A lot will be decided by your essays, LOR's and potentially interview.

Otherwise, very comprehensive list and competitive profile. I don't know if you will pull it off applying to so many schools in R2 - it takes about 1 month to do 2-3 apps. Possibly 4-5 but getting 13-15 is hard/impossible. Your recommender will not be your friend afterwards

So you'd better start working on those apps!
Good luck!

Thanks a lot for your insight!

Can you also advice if it is recommended to apply to INSEAD in R3 August intake for international applicants? Do I stand a good chance with my profile?

R3 traditionally is a vulnerable round. Vulnerable for applicants I mean. INSEAD has 4 rounds so it is not as horrible as the 4th one but you are applying after they have had two rounds of admitted people, and most likely be quite competitive… doing some research in the decision tracker for INSEAD last year, round two and three were somewhat similar so perhaps, not much worse off. As to your chances overall, you need to demonstrate that you can pull off a consulting job without having a summer internship and have really strong interview skills.

Ultimately, even if I tell you, yes or no, it’s not for sure 😇

Hey, Let me tell you honestly, you have a perfect profile for getting admitted to B- Schools abroad, you can sure shot get a great and prestigious school because of your past academic track, work experience, GMAT Scores and of course, your extracurricular activities.

Let us start by talking about your work experience, I must say I am impressed by your experience not only because of its time duration but also because of how relevant it is to the course you wish to apply for. You are also going to get global exposure because of your job, which again is a plus point and is going to make your profile look different and help you stand out from the crowd.

Now, let’s come to your GMAT score, which is 740, good enough to get you into top universities! So you need not worry about it. Plus, your GPA is great to go, I don’t think it will create any roadblocks in your application process.

Here I am listing some TOP UNIVERSITIES ALL OVER THE WORLD FOR MBA that you should definitely apply to -

Stanford University,
Harvard University
Penn (WHARTON)
HEC PARIS
INSEAD
Columbia Business School
IESE Business School, Spain
Esade Business School
UCLA
Oxford University.

I would suggest you to definitely apply for some percentage of scholarships as you might be able to grab it and it will help you to pay hefty tuition fees for a program like MBA.

I hope this was helpful.

Hey Varthika,

Thanks for posting,

Your profile looks good on the surface. 710 is a good score and your GPA looks impressive. Any valid certification, and extra courses will help you stand out on the academic front.

3 years of work experience will help you qualify for the schools you are targeting. However, to properly draw out your profile, you must demonstrate how you significantly impacted the company's operations and explicitly include occasions in which you took the initiative and guided your team through a challenging situation. I urge you to emphasize your roles & responsibilities, noteworthy initiatives, skills, and instances in which you displayed leadership and professional excellence.

Coming to the ECs, they play a major role in your application and can prove to play a major role in your admission process. Since you have mentioned Beta Gamma Sigma, Enactus and AMP (Business Honor societies and network of business leaders), you might have created a well defined network with other business leaders, try highlighting your major learnings from it.

Your post-MBA goals of Strategic investment and Entrepreneurship seem quite generic. You must be precise when describing your short- and long-term goals in order to match them with the schools you are aiming for. Try aligning your goals with the schools you are targeting and also be prepared with answers on how an MBA will help you achieve it. Consider reading an article on how to frame practical post MBA goals essay, you will get some insights!

Overall your profile seems good and stands a chance at top B-schools. It all depends on how you connect the dots and create a compelling story around it. Hence, if you’d like, we are happy to get on a call with you to discuss your profile in length and further chances to the schools. Feel free to schedule a call with us at your convenience.

Cheers!

Hi Varthika hope this finds you well

My 2 cents

1. Your professional background is only very briefly touched upon in your summary. Business schools do not just look at academic performance, GMAT, undergraduate pedigree, and employer brand to assess your potential. Your professional trajectory is the most important aspect that B-schools will evaluate you on, so make sure you present it excellently in your essay and resume. In what ways have you shown an upward trend in the last 3 years? What new knowledge and increasing responsibilities have you acquired? Recall several experiences where you took initiative to resolve conflict within teams, motivated employees and subordinates to move projects forward, and had a $$ impact on the business through cost savings or revenue increases. Your ECs are a plus.

Your motivation behind goals in Strategic Investment and Entrepreneurship must be rooted in your past experiences and not appear isolated.

2. Improving your GMAT score can further boost your chances of getting into the top 10 B-schools.

If interested in studying outside of the US, you may also look at some top European/UK programs and leverage your strong diversity quotient (such as growing up at the intersection of multiple cultures).

Best wishes

Hey Varthika,

Your 3.7 GPA allows you to seek top colleges worldwide. Rutgers Business School is a good brand and boosts your profile.

You have 3 years of experience, but we don't know for what profiles. Quantify it. Financial advisers may discuss cost-saving actions with customers. These quantifications will boost your profile. If you have a leadership position, indicate how many individuals you've guided. You may also list international clients.

Bloomberg and BlackRock are both good brands that boost your profile. You may also pitch by mentioning you're aiming to attend financial courses, like CFA level 1. This shows financial tendency. If you want to do strategic investing and entrepreneurship after your MBA, then you can take up related courses, which will benefit your profile.

Your GMAT score appears excellent, however, I suggest going for round 3, not round 2, since round 2s are already here. Your application will take 15-20 days, or else you'll hurry it.

You can target round 3 with a bulletproof application.

If you need more help, we'd be happy to setup a call and give more pointers on how to improve your profile and the right schools you should target.

Hey jeonacivil

Your CGPA seems good. You have strong professional experience and great master's, undergrad, and school grades. If you're from a Tier 1 school, wonderful; else, employment experience will do the needful.

Your 8 years of work experience is substantial, therefore you should highlight your leadership responsibilities on your CV. Your Canadian Master's degree boosts your international exposure, and you must also quantify and mention the cost savings, performance, efficiency, and TAT improvements in the job section.

Your school list seems nice. Wharton and Kellogg have low admission rates.

I will recommend you to look at a good chunk of other schools as well, like:
1. NYU Stern
2. Cornell
3. UCLA
4. USC Marshall

If you haven't begun the application, round 2 will be in a hurry. Every school requires 15 to 20 days, so you may strive for round 3s with your strong profile.

If you need more help, we'd be happy to setup a call and give more pointers on how to improve your profile and the right schools you should target.

Hi Kriti,
This is Ale - I am an INSEAD Alum and Associate Partner at MBB firm in UK. I am the founder of MB Career Consultants, and offer MBA admissions coaching services to applicants.

You have a great GMAT score (well done!) and a good profile overall. You do have a slightly lower GPA, but I'm hoping you have a reasonable explanation for that (which will be good to articulate in your optional essay).

To address your target schools, it would be helpful to know where you envision yourself living and working. If in Europe/Middle East - then European schools (LBS, INSEAD) are best. If you wish to live and work in US - then US schools are best.

In terms of INSEAD, you can apply in R3, but I would recommend to wait for R1 Jan 2024 intake - it's better to do INSEAD with option of an internship in my opinion.

If you want a free review of your CV, feel free to get in touch:
mazzarini.careerconsultants@gmail.com

Best,
Ale

Hey Amogh, your profile is pretty amazing.

I would like to mention one more thing here, you scored 760 in your GMAT which is pretty impressive.
You have very decent work experience. One thing is pretty impressive that you have launched offline operations in not 1 or 2, 8 countries that’s a big number. But after reading much I learned that you managed more than 100 city-level events, really really impressive. Great work with your work experience.

Thanks so much for the feedback and recommendations. This tool is for MBA only but I am hopeful we can soon (in 3-6 months) expand it. 😇
