Hello Everyone,

Greetings. I plan to apply for MBA for Jan'24 intake and Fall'24 intake. I've summarized my profile below and have posted some questions. Kindly provide inputs.

My profile
1) GMAT - 620

2) Academics
a) Completed Undergrad(B.tech EEE) from VIT Vellore(2012-2016). CGPA - 7.2/10. Backlogs - 15 (Cleared them within 4 years)
b) Vice president at IEEE PCS(Student chapter)

3) I've 7 years of work experience in Real estate and Building engineering. It is summarized below.
a) Building engineering startup [Jun'2016 - Jul'2017] - Worked as a GET to design the electrical architecture of projects such as Hospitals, Data centers, etc.
b) AECOM (Fortune 200 company) [Aug'2017 - Feb'2019] - Worked as an Engineer 1 to design the electrical architectures of projects like International Airports, labs etc.
c) CBRE (Fortune 200 company) [Feb'2019 - Mar'2022] - Worked as Deputy Manager to design and construct projects like data centres, R&D labs and high-end offices.
Took a gap for Apr'22 to Aug'22 for surgery.
d) Decathlon [Sep'2022 - Present] - Work in 2 roles - Energy sustainability India leader, Construction Manager North India.

Just so you know, because I was an electrical designer for 3 years, I performed many calculations for designing a project.
I also learned pressure management and client management during construction.
Currently, at Decathlon, I lead the country for sustainability initiatives like EV, Automation, and efficient stores. I also negotiate with Landlords for rent and prepare leases for North India's upcoming stores.

Questions
1) I'm targeting to apply for the TOP20 B-schools. Infact, was planning to apply to Columbia for Jan intake.
Do you think I stand a chance?
2) How much hinderance are backlogs going to make? Are top B-schools completely ruled out due to backlogs? Can my work experience make up for it?
3) Do you think I need to improve my GMAT?

Thanks in advance.

Hi ayg94 hope you are well

1) I'm targeting to apply for the TOP20 B-schools. Infact, was planning to apply to Columbia for Jan intake.
Do you think I stand a chance?

With a 620? Not quite likely. However, if you demonstrate perseverance and raise your score to a 720+ level (with balaned Q & V scores), the chances would increase in proportion to your GMAT score.

2)How much hinderance are backlogs going to make? Are top B-schools completely ruled out due to backlogs? Can my work experience make up for it?

Backlogs and low-grade point averages are a genuine cause of worry during MBA applications. However, it is important to understand that business schools often consider the context of these academic setbacks, and a well-crafted strategic explanation can work in your favor. In our experience, certain profiles, particularly those with strong analytical focus, still have a chance for admission despite low final grades. In addition, factors such as GMAT scores and the prestige of the college where you studied are often taken into account.

Some applicants believe that by not mentioning their backlogs/below-average performance during college in their application, they can avoid having this area come to the forefront, especially if they have exceptional work experience. However, this approach is not recommended. Business schools value applicants who reflect on their deficiencies and show a willingness to take action in the right direction. Whether your low grade point average is due to valid reasons such as serious health problems or difficult personal situations, or whether it is the result of mere inattention (this doesn't seem to apply to your case), it is important to explain these circumstances honestly to the admissions committee and provide appropriate documentation to support your claims. Nonetheless, you should present your case carefully.

Take courses to demonstrate improvement in weak areas:
If you are concerned about your sustained backlogs, show that you have been actively working to address your shortcomings. Consider taking additional courses or proofs from your work areas to show the admissions committee that you are capable of overcoming challenges.

Aim for a high GMAT/GRE score:
A high GMAT/GRE score can help offset your college performance. If you recognize that you need to achieve a high GMAT score, start preparing early and invest time and effort in your preparation. This may include taking practice tests, studying with a tutor or preparation course, and reviewing relevant study materials. It is important that you achieve a score that is above the average for the schools you are interested in, as this will show your commitment to academic excellence and improve your chances of admission.

3) Do you think I need to improve my GMAT?
Absolutely yes. All being said, MBA programs are quant heavy and academically focused programs. No amount of good storytelling will compensate your current low GMAT score and prior academics (especially if targeting Top schools).

Feel free to connect to discuss your concerns or application strategy with us.

Iti24,

Your 10th/12th scores and CGPA are strong. Your GMAT score, while competitive, may be equal to or below the average of certain top-30 global B-schools. I suggest retaking the GMAT if possible, as a higher-than-average score can improve your chances of both admit and scholarships.

Your consulting experiences at GEP and the current firm showcase your analytical and team/ collaboration skills. Would like to know more details about your roles i.e. key projects you worked on, the challenges you faced, what actions you took and the impact it had on your clients/ firms. Also, regarding your post-MBA goals: what are your short-term and long-term goals? Do you have a target sector, function, geography in mind? And how, according to you, would an MBA help achieve your goals? These points would allow me to better assess your profile and advise accordingly in terms of which schools to prioritize, how to present a compelling application, etc.

Hello ayg94,

To begin with, with a GMAT score of 620, admission to top 20 B-schools, such as Columbia, may be challenging. The average GMAT scores for these schools typically range from 700 to 740. However, it's important to note that admissions decisions are based on a holistic review of your entire application, including your essays, recommendations, and interview performance. Your work experience, leadership roles, and impact in the real estate and building engineering sector can be valuable. It's advisable to research and consider a mix of B-schools, including those that may have slightly lower average GMAT scores, to increase your chances of admission.

Although backlogs can create uncertainty during the admissions process, they do not entirely eliminate your chances of being admitted to top B-schools. To mitigate concerns about your backlogs, you can offer explanations and provide a context within your application, detailing the circumstances surrounding them. Emphasize your academic progress and improvement over time, showcasing your dedication to personal growth. Moreover, your work experience and professional accomplishments can effectively showcase your abilities and help counterbalance any apprehensions regarding your academic history.

With a GMAT score of 620 falling below the average expected by top B-schools, boosting your score would increase your likelihood of admission. It is advisable to dedicate time for GMAT preparation once again, aiming for a score that aligns with the averages of your desired schools. An improved GMAT score can bolster your overall profile, showcasing your capacity to handle the academic demands of an MBA program. Concentrate on targeted preparation, utilize practice exams, and contemplate seeking professional assistance to maximize your potential for score improvement.

Overall, while admission to top 20 B-schools with a GMAT score of 620 and backlogs may be challenging, it's not impossible. Highlight your strengths, such as your notable work experience, leadership positions, and positive influence, throughout your application. Expand your options by considering a diverse range of B-schools to improve your chances of acceptance. If feasible, strive to enhance your GMAT score to strengthen your competitiveness. Lastly, ensure that your application essays, recommendations, and interviews effectively convey your distinct qualities and potential contributions to the MBA program.

We offer a limited number of complimentary profile evaluations each week . We match you with the students and alums of top B-Schools according to your background and target schools. In this call, the experts will try to dig out your USP for top B-schools and provide you with honest feedback on your profile and chances to your target schools.

Hey SandeepReddy26,

I hope you are doing well. Your profile looks good on the surface. You have a competitive academic background and a diverse range of experiences, including work in a family business, involvement in an NGO, and leadership in extracurricular activities. While your GMAT score of 690 is respectable, it is on the lower side for top-tier US business schools, especially considering the competitiveness of Indian applicants. Before suggesting schools, let's discuss the GMAT retake option.

A GMAT score of 690 is not a deal-breaker, but it might be worth considering a retake if you believe you can improve your score significantly. Since you have some time before you start your MBA program, dedicating effort to boost your GMAT score could potentially increase your chances of acceptance into more competitive schools and possibly secure scholarships. However, if you feel that you have already given your best effort and a retake would not significantly improve your score, you can proceed with your current score.

Here are some schools that could be a good fit for your profile:

1. Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College: Tuck values applicants with a strong academic background, leadership experience, and a focus on collaboration. Your work in a family business and your involvement in the NGO align well with Tuck's emphasis on teamwork and community engagement.

2. Duke University Fuqua School of Business: Fuqua appreciates applicants with well-rounded profiles, and your leadership in extracurricular activities and board involvement with an NGO can be assets in your application.

3. Michigan Ross School of Business: Ross places a strong emphasis on action-based learning and community engagement. Your experience in the family business and your initiative to start a hobby club for kids demonstrate your proactive and community-oriented mindset.

4. UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School: Kenan-Flagler looks for applicants with a track record of leadership and community involvement. Your NGO board position and hobby club leadership align well with the school's values.

5. Emory University Goizueta Business School: Goizueta values applicants with diverse backgrounds and experiences. Your work in a family business, NGO involvement, and hobby club leadership can make you a compelling candidate.

6. USC Marshall School of Business: USC Marshall appreciates candidates who have demonstrated leadership and impact. Your work in a family business and the leadership roles you held can be advantageous for your application.

7. Georgetown University McDonough School of Business: McDonough values applicants with a global perspective and commitment to social responsibility. Your involvement in the NGO and your experience in a family business can resonate with the school's values.

Remember that the admissions process is holistic, and schools consider various factors beyond just academic and GMAT scores. Your work experience, leadership, extracurricular activities, and passion for community development will play significant roles in the evaluation process. Focus on crafting compelling essays and showcasing your unique contributions and aspirations in your applications.

Good luck with your MBA journey!

Given your short WE, low GPA and low GMAT, I would suggest you wait for 1-2 years, retry your GMAT to get a 730+, and also rake up excellent work accomplishments to have a fair chance at any of the Top 30 ranked schools in the US/ Canada; For MBA programs in Europe, longer WE is preferred.

Your over-represented profile (Indian Male) puts you in an even more competitive profile, and most of the Top 30 MBA schools have stats on their websites which will not favour you.

Happy to discuss your profile further and answer your questions 1-to-1

Work Ex
I have 3 years of work experience as a Data Analyst/Senior Data Analyst (received one promotion) at a Fortune 50 retailer based out of the US. Currently, I'm working as an Associate Product Manager (1+ year) at a Luxury Beauty retailer owned by LVMH for the South East Asian market. Throughout my 4+ years of work ex, I've regularly (almost on a daily basis) interacted and collaborated with stakeholders from other offices abroad. Post-MBA, I plan to secure a role in Product Management or tech. But I'm super confused with this right now, consulting seems more attractive.

Volunteering
For social work, I've been volunteering as a data analyst for around 9 months in an NGO that works towards the upliftment of underprivileged children. I'm a fitness enthusiast, and during my college days, I played football for my college football team in the third division (Amateur) of the state football league in Goa. In my last semester, when I sustained an injury that restricted me from playing temporarily, I utilized my time by being the head coach of the Girls' football team for that semester.

B school shortlisting
I want your advice on which colleges I should apply to (US only). I know I'm asking too much, but if possible, please bucket it in the way I've done below. I'm open to both 1y and 2y courses but definitely prefer 1y. And I'd probably prefer scholarships over ranking. Here is what my list looks like (I'll only apply to 5-6):

(Seems) Safe
- Cornell 1y Tech MBA
- Foster
- ISB (India)

Probable
- UCLA Anderson
- Kellogg MBAi
- Duke Fuqua

Moonshot
- Haas
- Columbia
- MIT Sloan (way out of my league)

I'm not keen on taking the GMAT again, but feel free to suggest if you think it's worth it and I might consider giving it a second shot

A GMAT score of 740+ can definitely strengthen your chances for your Probable category. Would like to know your reasons for preferring a 1 year course (Not advisable at your age and stage generally speaking; Happy to discuss in greater detail)
Your GPA puts Columbia and MIT out of your league. A less than stellar GMAT for your Over Represented category weakens your case further.

Hello everyone.

I need your opinions about my situation. So, I want to apply for top 25 MBA programs and getting scholarship is crucial for me. However the concerns are age and work experience: At the moment of my application, I will be 23 years old and my total work experience will be 22 months (18 of them are in the top 5 company in its industry). What are my chances of geting into top 25 MBA programs with scholarship? My GPA is 3.83 and let's assume that my GMAT score will be 750+. In addition, I am from underrepresented group.

I hope you will help me. Thank you all in advance!

StrawberryDembaBa, thanks for the details. Some points from an initial assessment:

1. Academic arc is interesting given the BITS pedigree. GPA is a bit on the lower side. A higher GMAT (even 10-20 points) can improve chances both for schools in your list and for scholarships.

2. Work experience is interesting particularly the international exposure and experience in PM (your post-MBA goal). Regarding the choice between PM & Consulting: it is alright to have a plan A and plan B, but have strong answers to why PM/ consulting, what your transferrable skills are (from past experiences) and what your target companies are.

3. ECs offer good talking points for essays. Make sure to highlight your learnings from your involvement in recent (within 2-3 years) EC activities, and how these can translate to your journey in/ post MBA.

4. Schools choice seems fine, MIT is a bit of a stretch as you have indicated. It would be ideal to target programs (in the T-10/15) that have good networks and placements in the PM & Consulting domains.

5. Use weighted prioritization criteria (as factors vary from person to person) to pick the 5-6 schools you will target e.g. brand value, alumni network in consulting/ PM, target companies recruiting, cost/ ROI, geographic (cities) preference, and any other factors that matter to you

Feel free to reach out for a deeper chat.

A high GMAT (close to your target of 750+) and an underrepresented profile-group can be strong points of differentiation. Would like to understand your professional arc i.e. role/ company, any promotions (?), key achievements in the role(s) etc. to assess the professional strength.

Generally speaking though, T15-25 would present higher chances of scholarships. Depending on your post MBA goals, targeting some of these schools (and some from the T15) that fit your goals and have average work-ex on the slightly lower side would be ideal.

StrawberryDembaBa hope this finds you well

Your profile has several strengths, including a progressive career trajectory and a solid academic background. It appears that you are now considering an MBA to facilitate a move to a new geography, particularly the U.S. (after your strategic decision to enter the product management field). If your goal is to enter product management at prominent technology companies in the USA, I can recommend some very focused MBA programs that are perfectly aligned with your goals.

Safe (If you present a great application)
Tepper MBA
Tepper Masters in Product Mgt (highly recommend. Its 1 year and very targeted toward big tech, R3 is due soon so you could give it a try)
Cornel Tech MBA
Foster
UCLA (probable scholarship)
USC Marshal (probable scholarship)

Ambitious
Haas
Duke
Tuck
Stern Tech MBA
Ross
Kellogg

Other, more ambitious MBA programs on your list might require a higher GMAT. In my humble and honest opinion, since you are looking for a program that will serve as a stepping stone to a great tech career in the US, and you already have product management and previous relevant experience, enrolling in a one-year Master's or MBA programs may also be a good option since the opportunity cost would be much lower and the programs are generally more focused on a product-oriented outcome as far as hiring is concerned.

Best wishes

Easier said than done. You have not provided any information about your work experience. What you have accomplished in 22 months will matter more than your employer's positioning in that industry. Your GPA is impressive, but your GMAT will play an equally important role since you will be at the lower end of the applicant spectrum. As a younger applicant, it's important to stand out from the crowd by demonstrating a solid understanding of your industry or field, gained through various projects and initiatives over the past two years. Demonstrating a steep learning curve in your career within this time period is critical. Also, explain in detail your future career plans and the initiatives you have undertaken to prepare for transition into your desired role, function, industry or region after the MBA.

Best wishes

Thank you very much. Can you please say what my alternatives are? Maybe master of science program would be more appropriate for my background.
Thank you!

As someone who has done their MBA fairly young, I would say there are pros and cons doing an MBA at such early stage of your career. Your maturity and experience level and contribution to the class will be on the lower side. This means in the work groups, you will not be naturally picked unless you are a really hard working and kind and all the other qualifies, you will be the weak link during the MBA. Also during recruiting, you will likely run into some disadvantages compared to your classmates and likely recruit for a less advantageous position (this has a lot of assumptions and you may be a firecracker type of a person who just keeps going 24x7 but without that knowledge, just wanted to lay out the pros and cons for you).

Many MBA programs actually ask for 2 years of work experience. 22 months is 2 months shy of that. Not sure how much of an issue that is - I would perhaps pose that to a few AdComs. You can try joining the MBA Walkthrough sessions and ask there in the Q&A with AdCom. The first AdCom Team we have is Fuqua https://gmatclub.com/mba-application-wa ... ent_id=290 on Aug 17 at 5 PM PST (maybe a pretty inconvenient time) or you can reach out directly.

For a top 10, your work experience has to be that of a rising star, clearly indicating your leadership and initiative and demonstrating achievement.
For Top 25, I think it is doable and likely possible to get a scholarship with your stats, but what may keep you out is your professional level. How will you look to a potential recruiter? AdCom hate when their grads can't find a job, so if they perceive that you will struggle finding a job, then they won't admit you. However, if you exhibit someone who could even find a job on an uninhabited island and could sell sand in a desert, then they would welcome you with open arms. They want strong students who will be strong alums and will strengthen the program.

Hope this helps a bit.
