Hello Everyone,
Greetings. I plan to apply for MBA for Jan'24 intake and Fall'24 intake. I've summarized my profile below and have posted some questions. Kindly provide inputs.
My profile
1) GMAT - 620
2) Academics
a) Completed Undergrad(B.tech EEE) from VIT Vellore(2012-2016). CGPA - 7.2/10. Backlogs - 15 (Cleared them within 4 years)

Just so you know, because I was an electrical designer for 3 years, I performed many calculations for designing a project.
I also learned pressure management and client management during construction.
Currently, at Decathlon, I lead the country for sustainability initiatives like EV, Automation, and efficient stores. I also negotiate with Landlords for rent and prepare leases for North India's upcoming stores.
Questions
1) I'm targeting to apply for the TOP20 B-schools. Infact, was planning to apply to Columbia for Jan intake.
Do you think I stand a chance?
2) How much hinderance are backlogs going to make? Are top B-schools completely ruled out due to backlogs? Can my work experience make up for it?
3) Do you think I need to improve my GMAT?
Thanks in advance.
Hi
ayg94 hope you are well
1) I'm targeting to apply for the TOP20 B-schools. Infact, was planning to apply to Columbia for Jan intake.
Do you think I stand a chance?
With a 620? Not quite likely. However, if you demonstrate perseverance and raise your score to a 720+ level (with balaned Q & V scores), the chances would increase in proportion to your GMAT score.
2)How much hinderance are backlogs going to make? Are top B-schools completely ruled out due to backlogs? Can my work experience make up for it?
Backlogs and low-grade point averages are a genuine cause of worry during MBA applications. However, it is important to understand that business schools often consider the context of these academic setbacks, and a well-crafted strategic explanation can work in your favor. In our experience, certain profiles, particularly those with strong analytical focus, still have a chance for admission despite low final grades. In addition, factors such as GMAT scores and the prestige of the college where you studied are often taken into account.
Some applicants believe that by not mentioning their backlogs/below-average performance during college in their application, they can avoid having this area come to the forefront, especially if they have exceptional work experience. However, this approach is not recommended. Business schools value applicants who reflect on their deficiencies and show a willingness to take action in the right direction. Whether your low grade point average is due to valid reasons such as serious health problems or difficult personal situations, or whether it is the result of mere inattention (this doesn't seem to apply to your case), it is important to explain these circumstances honestly to the admissions committee and provide appropriate documentation to support your claims. Nonetheless, you should present your case carefully.
Take courses to demonstrate improvement in weak areas:If you are concerned about your sustained backlogs, show that you have been actively working to address your shortcomings. Consider taking additional courses or proofs from your work areas to show the admissions committee that you are capable of overcoming challenges.
Aim for a high GMAT/GRE score:A high GMAT/GRE score can help offset your college performance. If you recognize that you need to achieve a high GMAT score, start preparing early and invest time and effort in your preparation. This may include taking practice tests, studying with a tutor or preparation course, and reviewing relevant study materials. It is important that you achieve a score that is above the average for the schools you are interested in, as this will show your commitment to academic excellence and improve your chances of admission.
3) Do you think I need to improve my GMAT?
Absolutely yes. All being said, MBA programs are quant heavy and academically focused programs. No amount of good storytelling will compensate your current low GMAT score and prior academics (especially if targeting Top schools).
