Could anyone please let me know why 'D' is the right answer? I had chosen 'E'. Thanks.

Hello Vishal90,

We hope this finds you well.

Having gone through the question and your query, we believe we can help resolve your doubt.

Option E is inferior to Option D, as it uses the needlessly wordy phrase "in comparison to", leading to awkwardness and redundancy. Moreover, Option D incorrectly uses "comparison to" to compare two similar things -- "the blue whale" and "any other creature"; please remember, "compared/comparison with" is used for comparing similar things and "compared/comparison to" is used for comparing different things.

To understand the concept of "Compared With" versus "Compared To" on GMAT, you may want to watch the following video (~1 minute):

All the best!

Why not B, why D?

In B, just after vocalise, louder is used.
But vocalise is a used as a verb here, and it should be modified by an adverb. louder is the adjectival comparative form of loud.
The adverbial comparative form is more loudly, hence D is the correct choice here.

Why not B, why D?

A noise can be LOUDER than another noise.

Or a thing can be 'louder' than another thing.

One thing can do some thing MORE LOUDLY than another thing.

Here, we're talking about how 'loudly' whales vocalize, compared to how loudly other animals vocalize.

Whales do so 'more loudly.'

Whales might be considered 'louder' than other animals because they vocalize 'more loudly.'

'Vocalize' is used as a verb in the sentence. Thus, we need to use an adverb. Now, we are left with C and D. Since, we are comparing whale's ability to other creatures not including it.
