Just a comment in relation to Option E. The addition of "desperately" changes the meaning of the original sentence, which just has “hope”. Many times on the GMAT you will have to choose between two or more grammatically correct options. One way to do this is to eliminate options that change the meaning of the original sentence. All answer choices come up with equal frequency. This means that 80% of the time the original sentence is wrong. However, it is still an important skill on the GMAT to be able to determine the meaning of the original sentence.

The one forthright clue is that a hope now is a wish for the future, neither for the past nor for the present. So, the hopefully intended future tense, present only in C, points to the logically correct answer.

It should be C.

although at first sight , all answers seems to be incorrect, but then we figure out that C is the best of all.

Hi All,
Please share your views about the foollowing SC question. What should be the correct choice:-

With global warming causing so much havoc with weather patterns recently, many farmers hope that their crops are producing more.

a) hope that their crops are producing more
hope is about future. "are producing" is used for what is happening. "hope" + "are producing" is wrong combination here.

b) are wishing that their crops ought to produce more
ought to does not go well with meaning.

c) are hoping that their crops will be producing more
yes we hope that something will or will be happening in future. - correct.

d) wishes the production of their crops was more
wishes + was --- mix of present and past. worng.

e) desperately hope that their crops are giving more production
same as A.

Only C makes sense. Hope + future tense - Correct
