1.With its abundance of noun inflections, Icelandic is one of several Germanic languages that is compact when written but can lengthen considerably when translated into English.
(A) is compact when written but can lengthen considerably when translated into English
(B) are compact when they are written, but they can lengthen considerably when they are translated in English
(C) is compact when written but can lengthen considerably when being translated into English
(D) are compact when written but can lengthen considerably in English translation(D)
(E) is compact when it is written but can lengthen considerably when translated in English

I went for A but OA is B ....Please explain..

common pattern for GMAT SC is
ONE OF + plural noun + THAT + plural verb

Languages are compact when written
but
Languages can lengthen considerably in English translation. <<< does it make sense.

I think it is nonsensical to say a language can lengthen. An idea/message in written form can be lengthen but language seems weird.

one of several X that (plural)

Hence, 'are' should follow 'that'.

A,C and E are out.

B uses a lot of 'they', which is not required and wordy.

B. are compact when they are written, but they can lengthen considerably when they are translated in English

D is hence the best choice.

2. One of the Xs <singular verb>
3. only One of the Xs that/who <plural>
4. The only One of the Xs that/who <singular>

"That" modifies the closest noun which is "several languages" - plural.

Basically means, several germanic languages are compact but can lengthen in English translation and Icelandic is one of those languages.

Not sure where you think you're seeing the past tense here, but, nope. "Are written" is a PRESENT-tense form of the PASSIVE VOICE.

The biggest issue in choice B is that it puts these 2 entire independent clauses in parallel:
Icelandic is one of several Germanic languages that are compact when they are written
—BUT—
they can lengthen considerably when they are translated in English.

This structure doesn't make sense. The contrast should be between two VERB phrases that BOTH have this set of Germanic languages as subject.
