Interesting note from the SOM Dean this week about the increase in applications:

Quote:
With just five weeks remaining until Orientation begins on August 7, I want to congratulate you again on being part of this tremendous Yale SOM class. Demand for SOM’s integrated curriculum, distinctively global approach to management, and interconnectedness to Yale University is high among prospective students: applications to the full-time MBA program increased by nearly 11% this year. Meanwhile, employment offers to the full-time MBA Class of 2013 are up substantially over the previous year, reflecting that enterprises understand the unique benefits that Yale MBAs offer them

Also, this is an excuse to post to get notified when this thread has new posts. :)

OhDenny, Do you know if Yale offers feedback to reapplicants? I couldn't find anything on the SOM website. I was recently taken off of waitlist and planning to reapply in round 1. Thanks
The feedback that I got as a reapplicant was during the regular feedback period, post July 1st. So, if you haven't already, you should write to the Admissions Office (mba.admissions@yale.edu) and ask for feedback on your candidacy, and you should get an e-mail back (mine took about a week, I think, maybe 2) with specific feedback on your application.

So this video interview thing is permament now. They actually tested it on us third rounders this year and I personally thought that it was a nice idea. Pretty sure I got put on WL at the last moment because of my responses. (Didn't get a real interview invite)

Hailmary, can you tell us anything about what the video thing was like? What was the format? What kind of questions did they ask you?

HM can get into more specifics if he wants to, but I'd say be prepared for a few quick questions (they're not going to want to/have the time to watch 30 minute videos of all their applicants) and be ready for the types of questions asked in any MBA interview.

Honestly though, I'd wait to get to that point in the process before thinking too much about the video portion. Figure out if Yale SOM is a place you could see yourself at, start/finish up your essays, and cross your fingers that everything else will fall into place.

Basically, they ask you three questions and you have 30 seconds to think and 90 seconds to respond. The questions are supposed to be fairly simple in nature. I was asked these three:

What will you bring to Yale?
How has technology changed our lives?
At your current job, how do you believe you are making a contribution to the society?

Honestly, I think all they are looking for is your whether you have good communications skills and whether you can think quickly on your feet.

Business Insider ranks Yale SOM #2 in the world

https://www.businessinsider.com/best-bus ... rld-2013-7

As always, rankings are rankings but I doubt anyone on this board would say no to good press about SOM.

Finally a ranking we all can agree with ;). It's funny how it says that last year Yale was "grossly underrated". One thing I won't agree with: Michigan State > INSEAD....really?

@aerien: If you can get into Yale, you can get into Stanford which is ranked below. But, I know, obviously you will never pick Stanford over Yale.

Hey All,

SOM has posted all of their late summer/fall admissions events. There are a ton, all over the world, and I'd definitely encourage you to go to these, especially if you can't visit campus before interviews. A great way to meet AdComs, current students, and recent alums. Enjoy! https://mba.yale.edu/MBA/admissions/events.asp

Thank you for posting. Hey, do you know if there will be an "explore diversity" day(s) this year, similar to last year?

Yes - we'll definitely be bringing Explore Diversity Days back this year. Although Admissions has not finalized dates, they should be posting them soon. Last year we had 3 throughout the fall, and I expect it'll be similar this year.

For those of you who aren't familiar, EDDs encompass a very wide range of 'diversity' from URMs or other minorities, to women, to LGBT candidates, to veterans, though that's by no means collectively exhaustive. They have a special tour, class visit, and program for those who sign up, including breakfast, lunch, and a reception in the afternoon/evening, and you also have the option to stay with a current student the night before the event. I hosted students for all three EDDs last year, and they were awesome events. I'm certainly hopeful that SOM will continue to get even more diverse, (we had a large increase in URMs in our class, and a humongous increase in veterans and LGBT students, and it looks like 2015 will continue that trend), so I'd encourage folks to sign up as soon as they're posted.

I attended one last year and it was definitely an incredible experience. All the key note speakers had done significant things to help Yale become a diverse school. Last year they had one each in October, November & December.

Man, the Admissions Office is on it! EDD registration is now posted. https://mba.yale.edu/MBA/admissions/events.asp

It appears there are two posted right now, though I would be surprised if the total slots wasn't the same or greater than the number of slots last year. I think December last year was a late add because Hurricane Sandy affected one of the others. Good luck racing towards the slots!

See all of you on campus soon!

Awesome. Just signed up for the November slot. Can't wait to return back to New Haven. Hopefully, this time we can get a tour of the new building - last time I just saw a skeleton :)

It's great that you can make it to campus again! Not sure if tours of the new building will be ready quite yet (won't that take away some of the celebratory fun in the January opening / admitted student weekend in February? ;) ), but maybe you'll be able to peak in a window?
