12 Days of Christmas 2024 - 2025 Competition with $40,000 of PrizesA certain online store sold a number of items over the course of two consecutive days and shipped each item on the day it was sold. During those two days, every clearance item was shipped with standard shipping, and every item that was shipped with rush shipping was non-clearance. Did Cory purchase his item on the first day?
(1) Standard shipping was the only method of shipping used for items purchased on the first day.
(2) The item Cory purchased was a clearance item.
Manhattan Prep Official Explanation:
Since there is no real math involved, this is a Data Sufficiency
Logic problem. Take careful note of the givens and what the question stem asks:
Items sold on Day 1 or Day 2
Clearance items → standard shipping
Rush shipping → non-clearance
Was Cory’s item purchased Day 1? (yes/no)
Statement (1): INSUFFICIENT. This statement does not give you any information about the item Cory purchased. It is possible that Cory purchased an item that was shipped with standard shipping and was shipped on the first day, but it is also possible that Cory purchased an item that was shipped with rush shipping and therefore could NOT have been shipped on the first day.
Statement (2): INSUFFICIENT. This statement tells you that Cory purchased a clearance item, and the stem states that all clearance items were shipped with standard shipping. But neither statement (2) nor the stem gives you any information regarding the days that featured standard shipping.
Statements (1) and (2) Together: INSUFFICIENT. Cory purchased a clearance item, all clearance items were shipped with standard shipping, and standard shipping was the only method of shipping used on the first day. But it is still possible that items purchased on the second day were also shipped with standard shipping.
In the visualization below the only viable clearance items are part of the standard shipping space. Additionally, Day 1 items must be part of the standard shipping space. The star represents one item that Cory could have purchased, one that is a clearance item with standard shipping and that was NOT purchased on the first day. The check mark represents another item that Cory could have purchased, one that is a clearance item with standard shipping and that was purchased on the first day.

The correct answer is (E): Statements (1) and (2) together are not sufficient.
