The distribution of mass within the core of the Earth, like the mantle that surrounds the core, has been deduced from the orbital behavior of the Earth and the motions of satellites controlled by the gravity of the Earth.

Explanation:
By selecting either A or D, we’re comparing apples (distribution of mass within the core of the Earth) with oranges (the mantle that surrounds the core), which is not correct.
-------------------------
(A) the mantle that surrounds the core ---> Comparing apples with oranges.

(B) that within the mantle surrounding the core ---> Correct comparison, concise & parallel.

(C) that of the mantle surrounding the core ---> Distorts the meaning; comparing distribution of mass & distribution of mantle. This was close and tricky. :)

(D) the mantle the core surrounds ---> Comparing apples with oranges.

(E) the distribution of mass within the mantle that surrounds the core ---> I have rejected this only because it’s lengthy.
-------------------------

My choice is clearly B.

Hope that helps.

Technext

As the guys said, B and C are grammatically OK - only that C does not make sense.
