My answer is D, but I think my approach was probably risky:

15 paragraphs * 120 words (max) = 1800 ----> answer will be less than 1800 by at least 15 words

I guess I could have done

1/2(15)*110 + 1/2(15)*120 = some value <--- but that just feels likes a colossal waste of time, am I right? Is this a safe approach?

Answer = D =1740

Minimum words = 15 * 110 = 1650

Maximum words = 15 * 119 = 15*120 - 15 = 1800-15 = 1785

Only 1740 fits in

A. 1440
B. 1540
C. 1640
D. 1740
E. 1840
Solution:
Total number of words is greater than 15*110 = 16500
And
Total number of words is less than 15*120 = 1800

Therefore,
16500< Total number of words in the essay<1800
Total number of words in the essay = 1740
