a) is wrong because institute is a collective noun , so 'it' should be used for institute and not they.
b) completely distorts the sentence.
c) major reason. 'declines in population and prosperity' should be followed by plural reasons and not reason.
d) same as B,
e) correct. corrects both the agreement issues.

In C, apart from the plural error, the usage of "the" is anomalous. But whats wrong with it?
