Hi!

I got accepted into my back up MBA school but am still waiting for Stanford to send their interview invite.

The deadline for the first deposit of my back up MBA is on March 17. Assuming I get an interview with Stanford, I will know their decision by March 30.

My question is..

Can I accept the offer of my back up MBA by paying the first deposit to save my spot and then rescind my application should I get into Stanford?

I am ok with not being refunded the initial deposit.

Thanks in advance for any input! :)

Unless it's early decision round for some schools that's binding (Columbia, Duke).
I think it's a common practice to pay the deposit first and then back out after getting an offer from your dream school.

Not great to do ethically but ultimately you need to do what makes sense for you and your career and if you feel that is giving Stanford a few more weeks then go for it. Some schools link their honor code to the deposit but rarely if ever is there any enforcement

Make some excuse with your back-up school and ask to defer the initial payment deadline by a few days..I did this with my backup school and it worked :lol:

Unfortunately, I didn't get into stanfrod but was able to receive a partial scholarship from the MBA program that accepted me :)

Ask your backup school for an extension of the deadline on their offer. Extensions are granted sometimes if you ask. Just tell them your situation honestly - that you have an interview invite from another school and would like to wait until you get the result before making a decision. Adcoms understand that choosing an MBA program is a life-changing decision. It cannot hurt to try. The worst thing they can say is "No."
