OFFICIAL EXPLANATIONProject SC Butler: Day 223: Sentence Correction (SC1)
SURPRISE AHEAD - see Notes• THE PROMPTQuote:
Acid rain is
considered not yet as serious a problem in the West as in the East, where hundreds of lakes have been rendered sterile by increased acidity.
• THE OPTIONSQuote:
A) Acid rain is
considered not yet as serious a problem in the West as [it is] in the East, where hundreds of lakes have been rendered sterile by increased acidity.
• "considered"
not yet is both garbled and not idiomatic
•
considered not yet should be
not yet considered-- insert a few other past participles in similar sentences (use IS) to test your ear:
Wrong:
The book is written not yet.Wrong:
Dinner is served not yet. Correct:
The lecture is not yet finished. Eliminate A (or, if you're worried, tentatively keep A but move on)
Quote:
B) Acid rain is
considered not so serious a problem yet in the West as [it is] in the East, where hundreds of lakes have been rendered sterile by increased acidity.
•
considered not . . . yet-- same category of problem as that in Option A:
not and
yet are misplaced
--
not should be placed before considered
• I think there's a hint of a weird comparison. Find the second AS.
The place "in the East" seems to be compared to "a problem."
• I can't quite tell because syntax is such a mess, but I suspect that this option would benefit by repeating
it isELIMINATE B
Quote:
C) Acid rain is
not yet considered as serious a problem in the West as it is [serious] in the East, where hundreds of lakes have been rendered sterile by increased acidity.
• good news:
not yet considered is used properly
• more good news: the words
it is remove any concerns about parallelism
Compare to options A and B. No contest.
SO FAR, OPTION C
Quote:
D) Acid rain is
not considered as yet the serious problem in the West that it is in the East, where hundreds of lakes have been rendered sterile by increased acidity.
• the word
the is too strong or weird or both
"the serious problem" makes it sound as though there is a particular problem in the West
•
not considered as yet is unidiomatic and illogical
Eliminate D
Quote:
E) Acid rain is
not as yet considered that serious a problem in the West as in the East, where hundreds of lakes have been rendered sterile by increased acidity
.
• "not AS yet considered" is botched again
• the word "that" makes comparison impossible. We need as -- as.
THE BEST OPTION IS CNotesThis sentence is densely packed with issues.
The word "consider" itself is NOT limited to consider X, Y.
Although this fact does not apply to this question,
Consider to be can be correct. A fairly recent official question uses
consider to beSPOILER ALERT: See this official question, which uses
consider to be. That question is
, here.COMMENTSGmat700Knight ,
prakhar992 , and
ravigupta2912 , welcome to SC Butler.
(I'll get to the question soon,
Gmat700Knight , but after the Soviets invaded Afghanistan in 1980, Jimmy Carter had to reinstate the draft after three years in office. Gerald Ford ended the draft in 1975. So . . . no, under Carter, for three years, no one was drafted. Your argument skills are good. Maybe you should go to law school?

I'm kidding. Kinda. I did so. You'd do well there.)
It is very late (early?) where I am, so I will keep this short.
This is one of those maddening questions in which repeated comparison of one option to another helps a lot.
Our task is always to eliminate the four worst answers rather than search for the correct one, but elimination requires more comparison than usual, I think.
Those of you who answered before time were brave.
All of you reasoned well even if one of your assumptions was off here or there.
Kudos to all.
Finally, my friends, please be safe.
I live in the U.S., my city is pretty much locked down, and the country has no tests because the lunatics are running the asylum.
Be safe.
And be well.
