Are Indian Women Engineers over-represented applicants?

I am a woman engineer from India living in the US. I have heard that Indian Male Engineers are a over-represented applicant pool. Is this true for women as well? Is it a dis-advanatge to be an indian woman who is an engineer?

Indian women in general are under represented. so you are not at a disadvantage at all. Rather its an advantageous position. Between choosing an Indian male engineer and a female engineer, schools would typically lean in your direction, unless of course the overall candidature doesn't make the cut.

Of course, i do not have his wealth of experience with the top B School applications.
But from what I've seen at info sessions so far, Indian Women Engineers are quite under-represented.

In terms of representation in the Indian applicant pool, Non-Engineers (Men & Women) would rank right after Male Engineers.
Female engineers ? A very distant third.

I'm a female engineer and I'd have to say it's neither an advantage nor a disadvantage. Unless you work in an unconventional field, you'd still have to work as hard as the rest of the pool to distinguish yourself.

I would agree with Prudence. I am a female engineer and have had to work very hard to write a compelling essay on what makes me different. I am applying in R2 and already feel it's a major disadvantage
