Paleontologists at the Montbrook fossil dig typically find the isolated bones and teeth of prehistoric mammals buried at regular intervals; the location of these fossils is evidence favoring the hypothesis of a prehistoric river fed by a nearby glacier that scattered the mammals’ remains after the decay of their soft tissue.
Quote:
(A) favoring the hypothesis of a prehistoric river fed by a nearby glacier that
Usage of "hypothesis of" is wrong.

Quote:
(B) that favors the hypothesis of a prehistoric river that was fed by a nearby glacier and that

Usage of "hypothesis of" is wrong.

Quote:
(C) favoring the hypothesis that a prehistoric river fed by a nearby glacier
"favouring" is modifying "evidence" correctly and that clause is logically referring back to "hypothesis".

Quote:
(D) in favor of the hypothesis that a prehistoric river was fed by a nearby glacier and that

The second "that" will also modify the "hypothesis". Hence, meaning is getting distorted with this usage.

Quote:
(E) of favor for the hypothesis of a nearby glacier that fed a prehistoric river and
Usage of "hypothesis of" is wrong.

IMO OA should be C.

(A) favoring the hypothesis of a prehistoric river fed by a nearby glacier that
favoring modifies “evidence”. “That” modifies glacier: wrong. It’s “a prehistoric river” scattered the mammals’ remains, not “a nearby glacier” scattered.

(B) that favors the hypothesis of a prehistoric river that was fed by a nearby glacier and that
Since GMAT prefers that clause, we use “the hypothesis that” instead of “the hypothesis of”. Moreover, “a prehistoric river that … and that …” is that clause parallel but there is no verb go with “river” -> wrong.

(C) favoring the hypothesis that a prehistoric river fed by a nearby glacier
“fed by a nearby glacier” modifies “a prehistoric river”, “a prehistoric river … scattered…”: correct

(D) in favor of the hypothesis that a prehistoric river was fed by a nearby glacier and that
we use V-ing modifer instead of a noun

(E) of favor for the hypothesis of a nearby glacier that fed a prehistoric river and
Same as (D)

The correct answer is C

-Suspected to be incorrect.
Rationale: The word "that" is not needed.

(B) that favors the hypothesis of a prehistoric river that was fed by a nearby glacier and that
-Suspected to be incorrect.
Rationale: The words "and that" are not needed.

(C) favoring the hypothesis that a prehistoric river fed by a nearby glacier
-Suspected to be correct.
Rationale: This option supports that the prehistoric river scattered the mammals' remains.

(D) in favor of the hypothesis that a prehistoric river was fed by a nearby glacier and that
-Suspected to be incorrect.
Rationale: The words "and that" are not needed.

(E) of favor for the hypothesis of a nearby glacier that fed a prehistoric river and
-Suspected to be incorrect.
Rationale: The phrase "of favor for" is being misused, it should be either "in favor of" or "favoring".

(A) is incorrect because it does not provide a clear connection between the fossils and the hypothesis. The phrase "favoring the hypothesis of a prehistoric river fed by a nearby glacier that" is not as concise and clear as the correct option.
(B) is incorrect because it repeats the phrase "that" unnecessarily, making the sentence wordy and less clear.
(C) This option is grammatically correct and gives clear meaning that the river scattered the fossils. Hence, Correct option
(D) is incorrect because it changes the meaning of the sentence by using "in favor of the hypothesis," which does not convey the intended meaning as effectively as the correct option.
(E) is incorrect because it changes the word order and structure of the sentence, making it less clear and less grammatically correct.

(A) favoring the hypothesis of a prehistoric river fed by a nearby glacier that
"hypothesis" should be followed by "that" rather than "glacier + that". Therefore eliminate this.
(B) that favors the hypothesis of a prehistoric river that was fed by a nearby glacier and that
instead of "that favors" we should use "favoring". Therefore eliminate this.
(C) favoring the hypothesis that a prehistoric river fed by a nearby glacier
Corrects the mistake of option A. Lets keep it.
(D) in favor of the hypothesis that a prehistoric river was fed by a nearby glacier and that
"favoring" should be used instead of "in favor". For this reason lets eliminate this option.
(E) of favor for the hypothesis of a nearby glacier that fed a prehistoric river and
"favoring" should be used instead of "of favor". For this reason lets eliminate this option.

Therefore the correct option is option C.

Experts' Global Official Explanation:

Verb Forms + Idioms + Grammatical Construction + Meaning + Redundancy/Awkwardness

Understanding the intended meaning is key to solving this question; the intended core meaning of this sentence is that the location of the prehistoric mammal fossils is evidence favoring the hypothesis that a prehistoric river fed by a nearby glacierscattered the mammals’ remains.

    • “Hypothesis that” is a correct, idiomatic construction.
    • Any elements linked by a conjunction (“and” in this sentence) must be parallel.

A. Trap. This answer choice incorrectly modifies “glacier” with “that scattered the mammals’ remains…”,incorrectly implying that the glacier itself scattered the remains; the intended meaning is that that the river fed by the glacier scattered the mammals’ remains. Further, Option A incorrectly uses the unidiomatic construction “hypothesis of” rather than the idiomatic construction “hypothesis that”; please remember, “hypothesis that” is a correct, idiomatic construction.

B. Trap. This answer choice fails to maintain parallelism between “that was fed by a nearby glacier” and “that scattered the mammals’ remains…”; please remember, any elements linked by a conjunction (“and” in this sentence) must be parallel. Further, Option B incorrectly uses the unidiomatic construction “hypothesis of” rather than the idiomatic construction “hypothesis that”; please remember, “hypothesis that” is a correct, idiomatic construction.

C. Correct. This answer choice correctly modifies the noun phrase “a prehistoric river” with the verb modifier “fed by a nearby glacier” and the verb phrase “scattered the mammals’ remains…”, conveying the intended meaning- that the location of the prehistoric mammal fossils is evidence favoring the hypothesis that a prehistoric river fed by a nearby glacierscattered the mammals’ remains. Further, Option C avoids the parallelism error seen in Options B and D, as it does not employ any conjunctions. Additionally, Option C correctly uses the idiomatic construction “hypothesis that”. Besides, Option B is free of any awkwardness or redundancy.

D. Trap. This answer choice fails to maintain parallelism between “that a prehistoric river was fed by a nearby glacier” and “that scattered the mammals’ remains…”; please remember, any elements linked by a conjunction (“and” in this sentence) must be parallel. Further, Option D suffers from a pronoun error, as in the pronoun phrase “and that scattered…” the pronoun “that” has no clear antecedent. Additionally, Option D uses the needlessly wordy phrase “evidence in favor of”, leading to awkwardness.

E. This answer choice alters the meaning of the sentence through the phrase “that fed a prehistoric river and scattered”; the construction of this phrase incorrectly implies the glacier itself scattered the remains; the intended meaning is that that the river fed by the glacier scattered the mammals’ remains. Further, Option C incorrectly uses the unidiomatic construction “hypothesis of” rather than the idiomatic construction “hypothesis that”; please remember, “hypothesis that” is a correct, idiomatic construction.

C is the best answer choice.

Hi Bunuel , GMATNinja , and other Experts,
What's wrong with B apart from idiom error? I think it clearly conveys the meaning that hypothesis is about a river that was fed by glacier and that scattered the bones away. Both are clauses and are parallel and modify river.
